Velma Larae Davis's Obituary

Velma LaRae Davis was born on March 20, 1949, at General Hospital to the late Charlie Jo Jones and Willie C. Jones.

Velma was a gifted student and proud graduate of Robert A. Taft High School, Class of 1967, where she achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA and earned the distinguished honor of Valedictorian. She continued her education at Howard University, where she attended for one year.

On October 28, 1968, Velma united in marriage with George L. Davis Sr. From this union, they were blessed with three children: George L. Davis Jr., Jamillah Davis, and Yasha Davis.

Velma dedicated part of her career as a teacher’s aide at Washington Park School, where she quietly contributed to the growth and care of young students. Beyond her professional work, she possessed a special talent as a seamstress. With loving hands and a creative spirit, she made clothing for her siblings and others, including winter coats, Easter outfits, and many treasured garments that reflected her care for those around her.

Velma was a woman of gentle strength, kindness, and quiet grace. She was deeply loved by her family and all who knew her. She was known as one of the kindest, sweetest, and most beautiful souls you could ever meet.

She found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She enjoyed watching her favorite television show, Murder, She Wrote, playing cards, and especially cherished the meals thoughtfully prepared and shared with her by family and friends.

Velma faced personal health challenges throughout her life that led her to live as a private person. She never complained or asked for more than what she had. Instead, she lived with gratitude, dignity, and contentment, embodying strength through humility.

Velma leaves to cherish her memory Her loving children:

George L. Davis Jr. (son), Jamillah Davis (daughter), & Yasha Davis (daughter)

Her legacy continues through her 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: Cecelia Jones, Calvin Jones, and Michael Whitby, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie Jo Jones and Willie C. Jones, and her siblings: Donald Jones, Ronald Jones, Veljean Jones, Dwain Jones, and LaCheryl Jones.
