John Preston
Byrd
June 12, 1952 – February 9, 2026
John Preston Byrd was born to Clara Johnson and David Byrd on June 12, 1952. John was affectionately called “JD” by family and friends. When JD was one year old, his mother married Larry Richardson, who lovingly raised JD and his brother, William “Bud,” as his own. Larry became the man JD and Bud proudly called “Daddy,” providing guidance, strength, and unconditional love throughout his life.
JD attended Cincinnati Public Schools, where he formed lifelong friendships and built the foundation for his future. He was baptized at Rose Chapel Church at a young age.
John worked as a custodian for the Board of Education before resigning to take a position with Thompson Learning, where he worked alongside his sister Becky, nephew William “Jaybo,” and cousin James Tracy.
On December 1, 1974, his only daughter, Antwanette Haynes, was born. She has many fond memories of him picking her up from school, teaching her how to drive, or simply riding around with the sunroof open, listening to old-school music and talking.
On November 2, 1990, John married Doris Gail McCloud. They shared 35 years together until his passing.
JD enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, whether it was camping with the family, going to Gatlinburg, or fishing and hunting with his brother Bud. They would take their grandson and nephews and spend all day fishing. JD also became an avid gardener, growing all kinds of vegetables. Sometimes he would have his two oldest grandchildren out there with him. He used to joke, “Not only do I bring home the bacon, I can kill it, grow it, and cook it,” and he definitely was a very good cook. He truly found peace and happiness being outdoors.
Known for his unfiltered personality, he had a way of making people laugh and keeping things real. He lived his life on his own terms and left a lasting impression on everyone who met him.
He will be remembered for his strength, laughter, and the love he shared with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed.
Though he was named John Preston Byrd, to those who loved him he was simply JD. On February 9, 2026, at 73 years of age, JD transitioned from this earthly life. He was preceded in death by his biological father, David Byrd; his mother, Clara Richardson; his father, Larry Richardson; his sister, Pamela Johnson; his uncle, James Brown; his brothers-in-law, Larry McCloud, Donnie McCloud, and William Waters; his cousin, Karen Willis; and his beloved nephews, Gregory Blackmon, Dion “BayBay” Akemon, and William Larry “Pooh” Roland.
Left to cherish his precious memories are his beloved wife, Doris Gail Byrd; his daughter, Antwanette Haynes; his grandchildren Tyree, Teanama, Haye, Kalayah, Kania, and Kamea; his great-grandchildren Zion, Zyah, and My Heir; his brother, William “Bud” (Iola) Johnson; his sisters, Laura “Becky” (Ronald) Neal and Naudra “Cookie” Waters-Lewis; his sisters-in-law, Jene' McCloud and Peggy Riley; his special aunt, Alberta Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
