James Watkins, Sr. Obituary

James Douglas Watkins, Sr. was born on August 14, 1934, in Newport, Kentucky to the late Charles and Geneva (Glover) Watkins.  He attended Southgate School and graduated from William Grant High.  He also had some college where he took up general studies.  He began his working career in construction where he retired from Laborer’s Local 265.

He joined Corinthian Baptist Church (Newport, KY) in 1967 where he served faithfully as a Deacon.  He enjoyed attending church services and he devoted his life to doing the work of the Lord.  He served faithfully until his health prevented him from attending church.

In 1970, James was united in Holy matrimony, with Barbara Locke.  From this union, they had one son, James Douglas Watkins, Jr. (Angelina).  This union was blessed to add 1 daughter and 3 sons; Charmaine (Kahlil) Last Name, Edward (Charlene) LaBordeaux, Michael LaBordeaux, Herb (Nicole) LaBordeaux.  They resided and raised their children in Covington, Kentucky

James was a devoted husband and father.  He was very proud of his children and often bragged about them.  He was a very dedicated and committed worker; always making sure he provided for his family.  The most memorable thing about him was that he would walk any and everywhere with no hesitation.  No matter the weather, rain, sleet, or snow, you would find him walking to work, church, and anywhere else at his leisure.  He would walk from Covington, KY to Cincinnati, OH Union Hall for Union Meetings, or to church every Sunday.  That was just a window of his dedication and commitment to his role as husband, father, worker, and believer.

He passed away on October 24, 2020, at the age of 86 in Edgewood, Kentucky.  James was one of ten children born from the union of Charles and Geneva Watkins.  He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Charles Watkins, Benny Watkins, and George Watkins; and five sisters, Charlena Fox, Minerva Brodgen, Ruth Watkins, Hester Watkins, and Gladys Watkins.

James Watkins leaves to celebrate the life he lived: his brother Lowe; four sons; one daughter; 19 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.  His beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of his family, host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and spiritual brothers and sisters.
