Willie Gene
Simmons
September 27, 1961 – March 29, 2026
Willie Gene Simmons, age 64, of Cleveland, Ohio, gained his heavenly wings on Sunday, March 29, 2026, surrounded by his family and dearest friends. Born on September 27, 1961, in Cleveland, OH, Willie brought warmth, laughter, and joy to
everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Willie was the beloved son of Betty Sue and James Simmons. He graduated from Canton McKinley High School, Class of 1979, and attended the University of Akron, where he studied music. While at the University of Akron, Willie pledged Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Gamma Tau chapter and became known by his line name, Destiny. After college,
Willie worked at Sterling Jewellers, where he retired after many years of dedicated service. He was a member of
Mount Olive Baptist Church in Canton and later New Prospect Baptist Church in Cincinnati.
Willie approached life with a generous spirit and a gift for making others feel welcome. He spent much of his life in Akron, OH, before relocating to Cincinnati, OH, to join his college sweetheart, Karen.
Those who knew Willie will remember him for his fun-loving personality, quick wit, and the way he could brighten any room. He had a special talent for making people laugh, telling stories, and turning ordinary moments into unforgettable memories.
More than anything, Willie loved music, travelling, sports, family, hosting parties, and caring for those he loved, especially his grandchildren. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures — a good meal, a little laughter, and a whole lot of love. Willie will be remembered not only for his laughter, but
for the love, light, and steady presence he gave so freely.
Willie will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Karen; his children, Abigail and Brandon; granddaughters, Briley and Aubrey; grandson, Braxton; brothers, Virgil and Marshall; his aunts, Virginia and Elsie (Charles), nieces, nephews, cousins; his fraternity brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi; and his many family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty Sue and James Simmons.
