William "Smitty" Smith was born December 20, 1939, to birth parents Toby Elliott and Ruth Pettis in Appomattox, West Virginia, where he attended public schools.

William worked a short time in the coal mines in Beckley, West Virginia, and at  Raleigh General Hospital. Following his dreams, William moved from West Virginia to Cincinnati, Ohio. He worked several jobs before becoming a member of the Laborers Union, Local 265, working on many highways. He worked until retiring in 2005.

William met the love of his life in 1980, he married Marlene Long Baxter. They spent time traveling, fishing, and playing the lottery.

William is preceded in death by his son, William Hardy of Cincinnati and his sister, Idella Brown of Beckley, West Virginia.

William leaves to cherish his love and memories: his wife, Marlene; his brother, Robert Elliott of Staunton, Virginia; mother-in-law, Emma Long; sister-in-law, Michelle Long; nieces: Karen, Phyllis, Mildred, Cynthia, Katherine, Te'Cole, Shawnda, Margo, Jenisee, Amani, Whitney, Ariel, Jakya, Jaden, Jayla, Mya, and Alecia; nephews: Leroy, Michael, Jovan, Gene, Brandon, Rayshawn, Khalil, Marc, Zachary, and Shawn; cousins: Patricia, and Ellioitt of New York; special friends: Clint Savage and Jim Johnson; God daughter Freida Satterfield.

Visitation is from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, on  Saturday, August 11, 2018, at the Walker Funeral Home - West End, 930 Findlay Street, Cincinnati  (45214).   The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 11:00 am.

Interment will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, 4521 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45232.
