Walter W. Penn Sr. was born on March 22, 1934, in Cincinnati, Ohio to the union of the late Edward Penn and Lucille Penn White and departed this life on May 1, 2024. He was the third of six children: Edward Penn, Mary Thomas, Joseph Penn, Sr., Paul Penn, and Lucille Wilfong, who preceded him in death.
Walter W. Penn, Sr., has always been Set Apart by God. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Walnut Hills for more than 85 years and a Deacon for more than 50 years and served as Chairman of the Board for more than 40 years. He sang in the Male Chorus and Inspirational Choir and served as a Sunday School teacher. His true love for First Baptist Church was paramount as he served under Pastors B.E. Edmondson, Thomas Ferrell, Jr., Eric Cason, and Keith Turner, Sr. Walter was the church's longest-standing member and the Co-Founder of the City-Wide Deacons.
Walter attended Douglas Elementary and Withrow High School. Walter was a stellar running back for the Withrow Tigers. He was offered football scholarships to Ohio State University and the University of Michigan but declined to stay home to work to help provide for his endearing mother, Lucille Penn White. His love for football led him to coach the Evanston AC's Tomahawks, and Woodward High School he also coached baseball and basketball. His love for sports was a gateway, for him to touch so many young people's lives.
He worked for the United Postal Service for more than 35 years before retiring. His favorite hobbies were Bid Wiz, watching cowboy movies, bowling, and fishing.
Walter married his high school sweetheart - Flora D. Penn - on July 3, 1954, and to this union two children were born: Deborah and Walter, Jr. Flora preceded him in death. He was blessed to be united in Holy Matrimony to Joyce Walker on November 23, 1996, and to this union, two children were added to his life: Sylvester and Latasha.
Walter leaves to cherish his loving memories: His devoted wife; Joyce Walker Penn; four children: Deborah (Daryl) Powell, Walter Penn Jr., Sylvester (Lakeitha) Walker all of Cincinnati, and Latasha (Shadrack) Bitok of McKinney, Texas; 10 grandchildren: Eric (Tanya) Powell, Tiffani (Quinton) Kennedy of Cincinnati, Hannah Lancer of Los Angeles, CA. Allyson Penn of Kotzebue, Alaska, Walter Penn III of Orlando, Fla., Jariya Clay, Cameron Walker, and Caelyn Walker of Cincinnati, Kayla Bitok and Kyrie Bitok of McKinney, Texas; 10 great-grandchildren; six sisters-in-law: Yvonne Carney and Beverly Martin of Nashville, TN, Hattie Harrison, Barbara (Frank) Campbell, Loretta Dawson of Cincinnati and Mamie Dawson of Austin, Texas; two brothers-in-law: Marvin (Henrietta) Lusk of McMinnville, TN and Andrew Dawson of Cincinnati; one special in-law, Johnnie M. Powell of Cincinnati; His adopted family: Thomas George, Carolyn (William) Martin and Diane Thomas; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many special and devoted friends.
And now God has eternally Set Him Apart.
Visitation is from 9:00 am until 10:00 am, on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the First Baptist Church of Walnut Hills, 2926 Park Avenue, Cincinnati (45206). The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Friends and family will gather to share memories, find solace in one another's company, and honor the legacy he leaves behind.
Interment will follow at Walnut Hills Cemetery, 3117 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206.
