Stanley Eugene
Broadnax, M.D., M.P.H.
June 8, 1946 – April 20, 2024
It is with deep sadness we announce the transition of Dr. Stanley Eugene Broadnax M.D., M.P.H., age 77, of Cincinnati, who entered eternal rest on Saturday, April 20, 2024. Dr. Broadnax was the fourth child born to Rebecca and Sidney Broadnax, Sr. on June 8, 1946.
Dr. Broadnax, a Cincinnati native, graduated from Robert A. Taft High School in 1964 and attended the University of Michigan on a football scholarship where he obtained three degrees; a Bachelors of Science in biology, a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), and a Masters of Public Health (M.P.H) specializing in health care organization and administration.
After returning to Cincinnati, Dr. Broadnax completed specialty medical training in Internal Medicine at the Christ Hospital and served as Medical Director of the West End Health Center which was located next to the former Washburn Elementary School where he attended. In 1979 he was appointed Health Commissioner for the City of Cincinnati and during his tenure, he directed the activities of the largest health department in the State of Ohio with a budget of $35 Million and a staff of 750 employees.
He was the second-longest-serving Cincinnati Health Commissioner, the first African American to hold the position, serving for 13 years.
He is a former president of the US conference of local health officers and a member of the American Public Health Association, the Cincinnati Medical Association, Lifetime member of the NAACP, Lifetime Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc, and Lifetime member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association. Dr. Broadnax is a Thirty Third degree Mason and has been involved in many other professional and social organizations.
He leaves to cherish his memory a host of family, friends, and individuals who were touched by his love, commitment, and service to the city of Cincinnati.
Visitation is from 9:00 am until 10:30 am, on Friday, May 17, 2024, at the Allen Temple AME Church, 7080 Reading Road, Cincinnati (45237). Masonic Rites will be at 10:30 a.m. with funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Friends and family will gather to share memories, find solace in one another's company, and honor the legacy he leaves behind.
Interment will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery.
