Obituary

Shirley Ann Harris Chess Rone was born March 28, 1940 in Lexington, Kentucky to the late Simmie Harris Sr. and Hatti Helen Harris. Now living in Cincinnati, Ohio, Shirley, married Claude (Chester) Chess Sr. in 1953. Their marriage bore two sons, Chahn Claude Chess Jr. (Erlyn) and Timothy Wayne Chess. Divorced mother of two met George Turner and welcomed her third son, Gerald Chess. In 1962, she married Joel Howard Rone and this union blessed her with her only girl Stephanie Rone Clark (Michael). Shirley was mother to more than just her children, her doors were always open to family and friends that needed a place to stay. Shirley was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church at a very young age. Shirley was invited to attend Sunday morning service at a little church on a hill, The First Baptist Church of West College, which became her church home and remained that way even when her health failed and she could no longer attend. Shirley loved praising God through song so much that she joined Tri State Choral Society with whom she traveled all over singing the gospel. Shirley was the advisor to the youth and young adult choir for many years. She was known by the choir members for giving out little love pinches to those caught misbehaving. Shirley looked forward to teaching the kids every Sunday morning at Sunday school and was always ready whenever her church family called. Shirley tried to live by three simple personal things: Put it in God's hands, Treat everyone the way you want to be treated and she hated to argue. She would say 'kill them with kindness'. If you ever spent time with Shirley you would know that she had some of the most unique sayings that were passed down to her from her mother. Ask her what's for dinner and she'd reply 'food'. Ask her what kind of food and she'd say 'the kind you eat.' Ask her for a dollar and her response would be 'Yes, I have a dollar and the cents to go with it.' Shirley was a dedicated employee of Good Samaritan Hospital for many years. After leaving Good Samaritan (due to doctor's orders), she briefly worked at Manor Care Nursing Home. She enjoyed working with people so much that after retirement, she worked for Orlan Mills where she became their top selling Prof Consultant in the history of that studio. Over the years along with her full time jobs, Shirley always had what she called her side hustle selling cloths, Tupperware, household products or jewerly. She could sell you a swimsuit in a snow storm. Shirley transitioned from this life on the afternoon of Monday, May 11, 2015, surrounded by her family. Preceding her in death were her parents Simmie and Hatti Harris; three older brothers Russ, Simmie and Kenneth Harris; her son-in-law, Michael Clark Sr., left to celebrate her life and cherish her memory are her three sons, Chahn (Erlyn), Tim and Gerald Chess; her daughter Stephanie Rone Clark; her sister-in-law and closest friend, Shirley Harris; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins who each shared their own special relationship with her. Visitation is from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, on Friday, May 22, 2015, at the First Baptist Church of West College Hill, 6210 Betts Avenue, Cincinnati (45224). The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 11:00 am .
