Obituary

Rozalia Simmons, age 103, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014, in Washington, DC. She was born Thursday, January 5, 1911 in Montgomery Center, Alabama. Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at James Temple Church of God In Christ, 1116 Lincoln Avenue, Cincinnati (45206) with visitation from 8:00 am until 10:00 am. Share special messages with the Simmons family at www.HerbWalker.com. Rozalia was born to the late Charlie and Fannie Goodson, December 22, 1910, in Prattville Alabama. She married the late Fincle Davis in 1931 and out of this union one child was born (Luzalia Parks). They lived in Huntington, West Virginia until she relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio with her daughter. Rozalia worked at Bethesda Hospital for 27 years where she was afforded the opportunity to serve as a supervisor in the dietary department. She loved her job and especially the people who served with her. In addition, she was a foster parent for more than 30 years, and a Cub Scout leader for over a decade. She often volunteered at the Drake Hospital. After living in Cincinnati, Ohio for 10 years, she met and married the late James Lee Simmons, Sr. in 1960 and was joined by Doris, James Jr., Corrine, and Raphael. Rozalia was an active member of Tryed Stone Missionary Baptist church for 28 years where she served under the leadership of Pastor Anderson Culbreath, Pastor Arnold Culbreath, and Pastor Jerry Culbreth. During her time at Tryed Stone, she served on the usher board until she moved to Washington DC in 2008 with her daughter. She later united in fellowship under the leadership of Bishop Alfred Owens until her passing. Her interests included family, gardening, cooking, arts, crafts and traveling. She devoted much of her time and energy caring for others and in her free time she sold Mary Kay and Amway. Rozalia was recognized by President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and Mayor Adrian Fenty in honor of her centennial birthday. Mimi was honored annually by the Commission On Aging in Washington DC. In addition, she received several awards for her volunteer efforts and community service contributions. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Lee Simmons, Sr. She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters, Luzalia Parks, Doris King (Edward), and Corrine Mincy; sons, Raphael Simmons (Alice, who preceded her in death) and James Simmons, Jr. (who with his wife, Anna, preceded her in death); grandchildren, Thelma Parks, Delores Parks, Marvin Parks, Isaac Parks, Wayne Parks, Omar Parks, Brenda Rhodes, Donald Lewis, Jr. (Marlene, who preceded her in death), Gregory Simmons, Lamont Simmons, Whitney Simmons, James Simmons, III, Jeffrey Simmons, Sabrina Moncree (Ray), Erica Dean, April Simmons, Erron (Allee), Marvin, Larry Folson (Antonio), Vivian Watkins (William), Anthony Folson and Alice Folson. Adopted grandchildren, Antonia Love, Kimberly Willis, Daphne Giles, Cecelia Williams, and Thomas Giles Jr., Paul Johnson. Special friend, Alma Flowers and many daughters and a host of great-great and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mimi was blessed to live an abundant 104 years. She departed her earthly home on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at the Washington Center Hospital, Washington DC.
