Obituary

Rovelma Ann Giles (aka Tina), age 66, of Cincinnati, Ohio, completed her life journey on September 4, 2021.

Tina, as she was affectionately known, was born on June 19, 1955 in Monroe, Georgia to Alvin and Sybil (nee Bradley) Giles. She was the oldest of two children. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Donte Rogers; and her brother Gary (Ricky) Giles.

Cincinnati became Tina's home when her mother relocated her and her younger brother in 1963. She attended Withrow High School, becoming an alumnus to the home of the "Tigers" in 1973. That same year she accepted Christ and was baptized at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Lincoln Heights by her uncle, Reverend Larry Bradley. Two years later, she followed that same uncle and became a member of Greater Cannon Missionary Baptist Church, where she continued to practice her faith until God called her home. She believed in making her "own way" and began working at Keebler's Bakery in 1974 where she was employed for over 30 years. Later in life, she worked as a caregiver for St. Margaret Hall, retiring only when her health began to decline.

Tina enjoyed life; from an early age she was known for her sense of humor. She used her humor and wit as a weapon to lighten the mood, diffuse disagreements and bring joy and laughter to those who knew her. She enjoyed listening to music, completing puzzles (jigsaw, crossword, word search etc.) and in her more youthful days loved dancing and the occasional game of tennis. However, her main passion was for the people in her life, demonstrated by her close and loving relationships with her late mother, her late brother, and her life partner, Herbert Smiley. The relationships and bonds she formed with the people in her life is a testimony to her enormous heart. Her enormous heart led to the adoption of her only child Donte Rogers, whom she adored and was most proud of. Her maternal intuition led her to be a nurturing aunt, grandmother, surrogate parent, and a surrogate grandmother to her granddaughter, nephew, and nieces when her own son, brother and mother died. Her immense spirit led Tina, the first-born Bradley grandchild, to be big sister, hero, role model and protector to her 34 younger cousins. Her compassion for others led her to have a beautiful circle of life-long friends and friendships.

Tina was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. Those left to love and cherish her memory are: her life partner, Herbert Smiley; granddaughter, Taymisha Rogers; nephew, Gary Wilson; nieces: Anetra Wilson, Anica Payne, Sonia Slaten DeLoatch, Natalie Giles; a very special aunt, Eloise Allen; aunts: Hattie Whitlock (George) and Ola Avery (Robert); uncles: Ardanies Bradley (Charline), Reverend Larry Bradley (Effie) and Joe Bradley (Valerie); her extended family: Garrett Smiley, Gerald Smiley, Herman Smiley, John Milton Smiley, Norman Smiley, Casandra Smiley and Ann Jordan; and a host of family and friends.
