Ronald D. Watkins, age 70, passed away Monday, July 14, 2014. He was born June 23, 1944 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ron was born June 23, 1944 and attended Courter Technical High School and Hughes Night School. He worked at Christ Hospital before joining the military. Ron was drafted into the United States Army on June 18, 1965 and served in the infantry during the Vietnam War as a helicopter machine gunner. After being wounded in action, he was honorably discharged as a Specialist 4 on June 16, 1967 with, among other awards, a Purple Heart, Air Medal (for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight) and an Army Commendation Medal (for distinguishing himself by heroism, meritorious achievement, and/or meritorious service). After his discharge from the military, Ron worked as a postal carrier for the United States Post Office for three years. Ron joined the Cincinnati Police Department as a Recruit on October 24, 1971. Patrolman Watkins served in Districts 3, 1, 4, and 2. After a 1988 on-duty injury, Officer Watkins was transferred to the Impound Lot. Desirous of getting back to Patrol, he was transferred back to District 2 where he distinguished himself as a Field Training Officer for the balance of his career. Officer Watkins retired on Veterans Day 1995 with 26 years of service of service to his country and community and 20 letters of appreciation and/or commendation including two from Assistant Chiefs and one from Police Chief Whalen for heroic actions in 1990.
