Robert Woody Sr. was born on April 25, 1934, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Julia Woody and Theodore Coleman. Julia later married Steve Patton, and together they had two daughters. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Vernie Patton-Butler.

A 1954 graduate of Central High School, Robert served four years in the U.S. Air Force. Following his honorable discharge, he worked for the Gas & Electric Co. before joining the U.S. Postal Service as a maintenance mechanic, where he served until his retirement in 1992.

On August 1, 1959, Robert was united in holy matrimony to Betty J. Stephens. From this union, they were blessed with two children.

Robert joined New Hope Baptist Church as a teenager, guided by the spiritual leadership of his grandfather, Deacon West Woody. He was an active member of the church community, attending Sunday School and singing in the Young People’s Choir and Junior Male Chorus. He later shared his gift as a baritone soloist in the Inspirational Choir and was one of the original members of the Voices of Hope, a quartet of young men from the congregation.

Deeply committed to his faith, Robert served as a Sunday School teacher for adult and new members classes, and held the position of Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School. He also participated in the Evangelistic Class, sharing God’s word within the community. An avid photographer, Robert was often seen with his camera and was chosen as one of the church’s official photographers, photographing weddings, committee meetings, church and children’s activities such as speeches and plays.

Despite health complications in 1999 that left him unable to walk or speak, Robert maintained his faith and a constant smile on his face.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Betty J. Woody; his two sons, Robert Woody Jr. and Jonathan Woody; his sister, Jerry Patton-Wesley; sisters-in-law Brenda Flinn and Sabrina Stephens; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 3655 Harvey Avenue, Cincinnati (45229). The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation, beginning at 11:00 am. Friends and family will gather to share memories, find solace in one another's company, and honor the legacy he leaves behind.

He will be laid to rest at Vine Street Hill Cemetery, 3701 Vine Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45220.
