Edwards Sr.
February 18, 1926 – June 23, 2013
Robert Erskine Edwards, Sr. 'Bob' was born February 18, 1926 to the late Garnett Edwards and Essida Rhodes Edwards in Cincinnati. He was the third of four sons. He passed away on June 23, 2013 He was educated in the Cincinnati Public School System and graduated from Woodward High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944. While in the Navy he met Alceen Haynes. They were united in marriage in 1946. After his honorable discharge, they moved from Bremerton, Washington to Cincinnati, Ohio. Bob was a longtime member of Union Baptist Church. He later fellowshipped with the Fifth Christian Church and Phillipian Baptist Church. He had a career in public service. He served as a Cincinnati police officer. He also worked for the Hamilton County Welfare Dept., Child Support, Probation Dept and the Legal Aide Society. He was also a private vendor. He was a member of the American Legion. Bob dearly loved his family and they loved him. He was affectionately known as 'Grand Dad: by many grands, both natural and adopted. He leaves to cherish his memory: his dear wife of 67 years, Alceen; daughters, Diane L. Flint, Barbara A. Edwards, Hazel Jones; sons, Robert E. Edwards, Jr., William H. Edwards II (Nina), Melvin Edwards; 11 grandchildren, several more adopted, 21 great grandchildren; one niece, Janet Perry; one nephew, Stephen D. Butler; one uncle, Garnett Rhodes; one aunt, Corrine Jackson; six sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, many cousins, dear friends and special people in his life. From Family: We look forward to the Bible's promise of the Resurrection. Although 'Grand Dad' is no longer with us, he will never be forgotten and he will always be in our hearts. Visitation 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 1 at FIFTH CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 3203 Wold Ave., Cincinnati (45207) with services at 12 noon. Interment Dayton National Cemetery.
