A guitarist, he was known for his significant contributions to the Funk music genre. Raised in Cincinnati, Collins career began initially as a member of the group The Pacesetters, which he formed with his younger brother William 'Bootsy' Collins in 1968. They made a name for themselves serving as a backup band for James Brown, appearing on his hit 'Get Up (I Feel Like Being Like a) Sex Machine' (1970). In addition, they featured Philippe Wynne who went onto find fame as a member of The Spinners. During the early 1970s the Collins brothers joined Parliament-Funkadelic and recorded such hits as 'Flash Light' (1978) and 'One Nation Under A Groove' (1978). Collins would later join his brother's group Bootsy's Rubber Band. Parliament-Funkadelic was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
