IN LOVING MEMORY OF

Ophelia Lucille

(Thompson) Young

July 9, 1938 – November 3, 2024

Obituary

Ophelia Lucille Young (Thompson) was born on July 9, 1938, in Riley, Kentucky, to the union of the late Reuben Gentry Sr. and Mary Magdalene Thompson. She was the sixth of seven children. Ophelia transitioned to her heavenly home on Sunday, November 3, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family.

At an early age, Ophelia was baptized in Jesus' Name and filled with the Holy Ghost at the Star Bethel Apostolic Church in Riley, Kentucky, where she remained faithful until she moved to Cincinnati, Ohio.

She attended and graduated from Rosenwald High School in 1956. After completing her high school studies, she pursued a nursing degree at a local college in Riley, Kentucky.

In 1959, Ophelia married the late John Earl Person, and out of this union, three children were born. She briefly resided in Lebanon, Kentucky, before relocating to Cincinnati, Ohio, with her three children, where she lived for over 50 years. She later remarried in 1972 to the late Joseph Roy Young.

After moving to Cincinnati, Ophelia began a successful career with the Department of Veterans Affairs and Fifth Third Bank. She retired from both roles after serving the community for over 30 years.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend with an unwavering commitment to caring for and spending time with her loved ones. Ophelia embodied the true meaning of selflessness when it came to those she loved. She left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Alongside her boundless compassion and nurturing spirit, she was also known for her impeccable sense of fashion and baking skills, especially her cherry flips and 7Up pound cakes. Her favorite pastimes included attending church, cooking, traveling, shopping, solving puzzles, and watching her soap operas and cowboy shows.

Ophelia was an active and cherished member of Greater Emanuel Apostolic Church for over 40 years. She served under the leadership of Bishop Paul A. Bowers for many years and, more recently, under the leadership of Bishop L. Daniels until her passing. At Greater Emanuel, she was a faithful member of the Nurses Guild, Marvelous Mothers, Golden Gems, and the Greater Emanuel Women's Choir.

Ophelia was preceded in death by her parents, Elder Reuben Gentry Sr. and Mary Magdalene Thompson; her son, Stefan Person; her bonus son, Albert Bell; two sisters, Edna Louise Thompson (Hale) and Cora Thompson (Forbes); and four brothers, Charles Thompson, James Thompson, Garland Thompson, and Reuben Gentry Thompson Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Joseph Person Sr. and Dwight Person; four grandchildren, Stacy Smith, Joseph Person Jr., Jameese Price, and Joevonne Person; 10 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
