Nathaniel Haugabook Sr. was born on April 4, 1935, in the West End of Cincinnati, Ohio, to William and Ethel Haugabook. He was the fifth of eleven children. Nathaniel proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged after his service. During his military career, he was also stationed in Germany and spoke the language. Following his military service, Nathaniel dedicated many years of service through his work with the United States Postal Service, where he also retired. Those who knew Nathaniel knew him as a bold and intelligent man with a commanding presence. His home was the gathering place for family and celebration. He was a lover of music and education, never hesitating to use a moment to teach. He also believed strongly in taking care of health and set an example of discipline and stewardship. His love was often expressed through high expectations, honest guidance, and a steadfast desire to see others become their best selves.
Nathaniel was preceded in death by his son, Nathaniel Haugabook Jr.; his stepdaughter, Sheryll Scruggs; and his siblings Geneva, Leon, William, Geraldine, Betty, Mattie, Phillip, Norman, and Ronald Haugabook.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Betty Haugabook of 58 years; his children, Darlene Barnes, Nzoia Haugabook, and Ronald Haugabook; his stepchildren, Darlene Ferguson and James Scruggs; his beloved brother, Reginald Haugabook; his grandchildren, Sharonda, Harry, Larry, Brittany, Erica, Nathaniel, NaSante, Ronneisha, Jairon, Rayven, Re’maile, and Ronald; numerous great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the Walker Event Center, 3939 Reading Road (Corner of Reading and Paddock), Cincinnati (45229).
