Mildred White Underwood Garrett was one of thirteen children born to the late Robert and Mattie White on October 14, 1929, in Clark County, Kentucky. She was raised by her late Uncle Roy and Aunt Jessie White in Cincinnati, Ohio, whom she acknowledged as her parents. Although Mildred was raised separately from her siblings, she always enjoyed a close and loving relationship with her brothers and sisters in Lexington, Kentucky.

Mildred transitioned from this life on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at the age of 96. She passed away peacefully at home, in her own bed, just as she desired, with her daughter, granddaughter Rone, and grandson Isaiah by her side. She was at peace, enjoying the sounds of their talking and laughter.

Mildred was educated in the Cincinnati Public School System.

As she began her adult life, she welcomed the birth of two children, Jessie White and Paul B. White. She later returned to Lexington, Kentucky, where she met and married the late Elmore Underwood, Sr. This union was blessed with three children: Patricia, Elmore, and Pamela. Following her separation from Elmore Underwood, Sr., Mildred and her family relocated to Louisville, Kentucky. There, she met and married the late Steven Garrett.

In 1960, Mildred returned to Cincinnati with her family. She embarked on a career as a self-employed domestic worker in the private sector and later worked as a barmaid. She became well known for her short-order cooking at Mildred's Kitchen, where people gladly waited for her famous hamburgers, fish, potatoes, and onions. She truly was a person who knew how to make a dollar and budget.

Mildred was a strong woman and a devoted provider for her children. She established a stable home where they were raised with love and care. She was a diligent worker, a true survivor, and a woman whose positive spirit touched everyone she encountered.
