IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mildred Elizabeth
Dunbar
November 10, 1923 – June 11, 2021
Our beloved Mother, Mildred Dunbar, returned to our Lord on Friday, June 11, 2021. Our sweet family lost its Queen, an incredible beacon for us all. We are grateful to the Lord for our most cherished gift. We are humbled by His giving us "Our Number One."
Mildred was born to Professor George Dunbar and Louise Dixon in Texarkana, Arkansas. At about twenty three years old, she moved to Cincinnati upon her father's request. She attended Calvary Methodist Church. Who could hold more roles? She was daughter, mother, friend, and grandmother. Beyond these roles, she was an incredible leader, Chief, Sole commander. Controller. Our best fighter. Mentor. Mover and shaker. Director. Confidante. Principal. Her best role was Grandmother.
It would be impossible to list all Mildred's experiences. After all, there's plenty to do in 97 years. Quite frankly, our Mother was naturally busy. Here are a few: attended nurse training at an young age; worked full time and retired at 62; while working full time, cared for her Father for 6 years; cared for her cousin in her late 70s; underwent radiation treatment and beat cancer in her late 80s, and raised many of her grandchildren. For our Mother, life involved faith and mindset all day. She was a healthy 97 year old and could walk better than many of us.
Her best accomplishments are the legacies that she has left with many people. Mother had an incredible talent of getting to know everyone. Everyone mattered; no one was a stranger. She was a natural born leader, who embodied charisma and confidence and could draw people together to accomplish a common goal. Our Mother was simply active. She was active in self-care, health care, and in the lives of others.
As a neighborhood kid, you may have called her "Granny." Just know: she claimed you. She once said she had so many grandkids she was unable to count. You may have set out or brought in her garbage cans weekly. If you were across the street you may have looked her way, intentionally looked out for her, or "stopped by." Just know: we appreciate you! Mildred is survived by two daughters Barbara Dunbar and Judith Maiden (Robert) and daughter-in-law Helen Dunbar (Eric, preceded in death).
She is survived by her incredibly loving grandchildren: Courtney Compton, Elyse Dunbar, Lavar Gannaway, George Kelley Jr, Lakita Kelley, Asad Maiden, Jahaan Maiden, Tariq Maiden (Heidi), Erica Moore, Keynaz Moore, Latasha Reed, Sharhonda Thomas (Chris), Deidra Watkins, and Dwayne Watkins and many great grandchildren.
With heart felt gratitude, we the family respectfully thank and acknowledge each and every one of your visits, calls, prayers, cards, floral arrangements, and all other expressions of love and sympathy shown during our time of bereavement. Special thank you to all Mother's Caregivers. However deep appreciation and special thanks to Dr. Yash Patil, Dr. Bradley Huth, and Dr. Mary M. Duck Robertshaw; you truly are our champions.
