Obituary

Michael "Big Mike" Calhoun Sr., peacefully departed this life on November 15, 2024, at the age of 62. Michael was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on November 23, 1961, to the late Elmer "Buddy" and Joan "Mama Jo" Calhoun. He grew up in Woodlawn and attended school in the Princeton City School District from Elementary through High School. During High School he also attended Scarlet Oaks Vocational School where he studied brick masonry.

Michael's early career spanned various jobs, from bakery crafts to dock work, and he worked tirelessly until his health began to decline. Throughout his life, his infectious energy and vibrant smile made him a cherished presence in every room he entered. He was known for his warm heart, quick wit, and sense of humor that could light up even the darkest days.

A true car enthusiast, Michael had a deep passion for cars, always eager to work on them and attend car shows. He could often be found tinkering with an engine or admiring a classic model. But his greatest gift wasn't just his skills or his love for cars—it was his generosity. Michael would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it, always putting others first. His thriftiness and ability to turn a little into a lot made him a trusted and dependable friend, and he was never fooled by appearances, always seeing things for what they truly were.

Michael had an incredible ability to keep in touch with people from all stages of his life. If you asked him about someone from his childhood, he'd give you a detailed rundown of their story, proving his love for connection and his unwavering loyalty to those he cared about. His kindness knew no bounds, and he made everyone feel like family. But what truly set Michael apart were the special nicknames he gave to his family members and friends, each one a reflection of his deep affection and playful spirit.

Michael is survived by his beloved sons, Bryant Rucker and Joshua Calhoun; grandchildren Michael III, Bryant Rucker Jr., and Bre'asia Rucker; sisters Patricia Jones, Lafawn Calhoun, Renee Perry, Jeneen (Stanley) West; brothers Darryl Calhoun, Dwayne Hall, and Terry (Sherri) Calhoun; and aunt Elaine Menifee; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved him deeply. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Calhoun II, and his sister, Delexa Calhoun.

Michael will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him and in the many lives he touched with his selflessness and vibrant spirit.
