December 24, 1946 – February 3, 2026
A beautiful angel, Mattie Lee Johnson, was born in Marion Junction, Alabama, to the late Mr. Deotrice Johnson and the late Mrs. Ola L. Johnson on December 24, 1946. She was the first child of 5 born to this union. Mattie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in Marion, Alabama. Her family moved to Tuscaloosa, where she attended high school. In her early twenties, she joined Second Baptist Church in Holt, Alabama, before relocating to Cincinnati, Ohio.
Mattie pursued higher education in college for business and other endeavors before attaining training to work in the Physical Therapy Department at the Cincinnati VA Hospital. Mattie met and married the love of her life, Willie Garvin, and to this union, two children were born. One preceded her in death, Joy Michelle Garvin.
Mattie joined Second Baptist Church in Cincinnati, where she served as a faithful member and served in many capacities, including Usher board, Deaconess, to name a few.
On February 03, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, she moved from her earthly home to her heavenly home.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory: husband, Willie Garvin; her devoted and loving son, Darnell Garvin (Kenesha); five grandchildren: Raven Smith-Garvin, Keiarra Garvin, Darnell Garvin II, Zariya Hayes (whom Mattie raised), and Amylah Garvin; one great-granddaughter, Rayn Smith; two devoted sisters: Clara Edmond who resides in San Diego, CA, and Lena Johnson who resides in Birmingham, AL; two faithful friends as sisters: Rubbie Howell and Gail Gordon. Mattie also leaves behind two great-nephews: DeJovan and Nicholas Edmond of San Diego; one great-niece, Nicolette Davis of San Diego; and many adopted and Godchildren. Mattie's very special friends: Denice Felton, Adele Colvard, Vicky Butler, Vicka Bell, Sandra Cornwell, Dorothea Jones, Sandy Lee, and numerous loving relatives and friends.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, on Friday, February 13, 2026, at the Second Baptist Church of West College Hill, 6225 Betts Avenue, Cincinnati (45224). The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation, beginning at 11:00 am. Friends and family will gather to share memories, find solace in one another's company, and honor the legacy she leaves behind.
She will be laid to rest at Spring Grove Cemetery, 4521 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45232.
