The Obituary Leroy Bates, Jr., affectionately known as June, was born on October 19, 1955 in Stringtown, Mississippi to the union of Leroy Bates Sr. and Sarah L. McDavis (nee Walton-Bates). He was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Leroy received his secondary education at Nugent Center High School and college studies at Langston University and Mississippi Valley State University. He later served in the U.S. Army. Leroy confessed his hope in Christ at an early age and in his early Twenties became an ordained minister. He served as a faithful member of First Baptist Church and later New Jerusalem Baptist Church until his health failed him. Leroy was united in Holy Matrimony on July 24, 1993 to Angela Hurt and two children were born to this union. Working in the ministry and spending time with family was his true passion. Other than his grandparents, Leroy is preceded in death by his brother, Darnell Bates. Memories of Leroy Bates, Jr. will forever be cherished by his parents, Leroy Bates Sr. and Sarah (Melvin) McDavis; his wife of 20 years, Angela Bates; two sons, Joseph Sims and Zachary Bates and one daughter, Maia Bates; three brothers, Raymond Bates, Larry (Sytire) Bates, Augusta Bates; one sister, Brenda (Cedric) Bostick; six uncles, nine aunts and a host of other relatives and friends.
