On December 19, 2002, in Paintsville, Ky., Lawrence Archie "Bud" Shafer, departed this life at the age of 82 years, and 17 days. He was born in Charleston, West Virginia, December 2, 1920, to the late Lawrence Shafer Sr., and Bertha Bower Shafer. On July 23, 1949, at Oil City, Pennsylvania, he married Sara Ann Dickinson who survives his death. Additionally is one son and one daughter, Lawrence Edward of Hollywood Florida; and Dr. Diane Shafer of Paintsville; also a granddaughter survives, Sara Teresa Shafer also of Paintsville; one brother and one sister survive additionally, Earl Shafer and Joan Gold Oaks, both of Oil City, Pennsylvania. Bud was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. During his lifetime he had accomplished many good deeds and tasks by demonstrating his love and willingness to assist others by unselfishly giving of his knowledge and time. Among his accomplishments, he was highly decorated while serving his country in the Air Force; while attending Yale University, he was honored with the Communication Commission; he served as a Boy Scout leader; Bud was a member of the Roseville Masonic Lodge; he was a member of the New Castle Consistery, Lodge of Perfection; his beautiful bass voice contributed to the Johnson County Senior Singers; he was a longtime member of the Mayo Methodist Church; after serving as a Chemical Engineer for Pennzoil Refinery for 40 years, he retired, but became the system manager of Dr. Diane Shafer's office of Orthopaedics Surgery. Bud died quietly at home with his wife of 53 years, and his daughter at his side. At his wish, he was laid to rest at the Wells-Buckingham Cemetery in a private graveside ceremony with Rev. Benny Bentrop, and with the choir singing Amazing Grace.
