IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Laura
Caliman
October 14, 1949 – January 25, 2014
Visitation Saturday, February 1st, 2014 - 09:00 AM to 10:00 AM - Rockdale Baptist Church 539 Forest Avenue - Cincinnati, OH - 45229 Service Saturday, February 1st, 2014 - 10:00 AM - Rockdale Baptist Church 539 Forest Avenue - Cincinnati, OH - 45229 Laura's journey began on October 14, 1949 at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to her loving parents Percy and Jacqueline Johnson. Laura's first years of life were spent in Louisiana. During the Black Migration of the 1950's Laura's immediate family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where her father, mother and family member (Herman Prevost) founded a viable minority contracting company called Kinsdale Construction Company. Laura graduated from Hoban Dominican High School and enrolled at Ohio University. While attending Ohio University Laura met several lifelong friends. Upon transferring to the University of Cincinnati, Laura worked at Sears Department store on Reading Road and graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Education degree. Laura taught in the Cincinnati Public School system for several years, before the blizzard of 1978, when she gave birth to her only daughter Lorraine (Caliman) Pennyman. Laura resumed teaching in the mid-1980's with the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and taught at St. Mark Catholic School and St. Cecilia Catholic School until her retirement in the late 1990's. As a 25 year resident of Paddock Hills, Laura was an actively engaged neighbor. Laura was known as an amazing cook who embraced everyone that walked through her door; cooking her infamous red beans and rice and other special Creole dishes. In 1998, her mother moved to Cincinnati and Laura was overjoyed with having her mother closer. Their relationship flourished and strengthened. In 2004, Laura gained a son, Chontae Pennyman, as he and her only daughter were wed. In 2007, she celebrated the birth of her grandson, Jayden, and in 2009 continued the celebration welcoming her twin granddaughters, Alana and Kyra. She continued to appreciate and respect nature through gardening and sharing her gardening tips with others. Laura departed this life on January 25, 2014. She leaves behind to cherish her memory: her mother, Jacqueline Johnson, her daughter Lorraine (Chontae) Pennyman, three grandchildren and a host of family and friends. Laura was preceded in death by her father, Percy Johnson; aunt Agnes Hayes; and ex-husband Alvah Caliman.
