Obituary

Julius "MR T" Turner – born to the union of Harlene and James Turner on November 10, 1930 in High Point North Carolina. His family moved to Cincinnati. Ohio when he was eight. He was the eldest of four children, Suzanne, LaVerne and James,"Jimmy". Julius grew up in the Laurel Holmes/Lincoln Courts and attended Woodward High School, graduating in 1948. Upon graduation he joined the Navy and soon after married Bettie Taylor. They had four children together, Gregory, Karen, Gary and Keith. They were married for 12 years. Julius had two daughters, Carla Reed and Dorothea Hughes, by separate relationships. He remarried in 1969 to the late Peggy Bronston. From this marriage he had a son Kelvin. Julius was employed at General Electric Evendale Plant until he retired in 1992. During his long life of 84 years he made many friends. He was a partier and loved to hang out with his friends and his kids. He coached his son's softball team "The Newbreeds" for a number of years and became known as "PoPs" or "Mr. T" to many of the players. Most weekends you could find him sitting in the bleachers enjoying softball. He followed both the men's and women's leagues making friends in both. He enjoyed all sports but definitely could not play them all, as was witnessed when he joined a GE bowling league with his daughter. He played in the GE basketball league in the early 60's. Julius also loved music and dancing. Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson were two of his favorite artist. His retirement party and 60th birthday party were two of the best parties St. Mark's has ever seen. He enjoyed going to see action movies. He would often leave GE on the evening shift and go the movies with his kids and still got paid for the entire shift. You figure it out??? He could have a conversation about anything with anyone. He loved sharp cars and keeping them clean, nice clothes and shoes. He always sported a cap or hat to complement his attire. He never forgot a face or name and never met a stranger. As he grew older and his friends began to pass he attended the funerals of the people he recognized from work, school or the neighborhood. For the past 10 years Julius has lived in Forest Park. His friends, children and children's friends were always welcome. You could stop by his place and have a drink and talk sports, current events or just "talk trash". He was always a welcoming host. Once you became his friend he continued to think of you that way. This is something he tried to instill in his children. This last year his health begin to fail and he was forced to move into an assisted living facility and then into a nursing home. Two of his granddaughters, Shannan and Keisha, who are nurses watched over his care diligently. On November, 5th he left this world and entered eternal rest. He was tired and God took him home. Julius will definitely leave a gaping hole in the lives of his children. His children who called him daily, fussing with him, gossiping with him and slamming each other with him. His children will be forever grateful to all who called, stopped by, rode him around, fed him and never let him go.
