IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Hammie
Houser
November 24, 1922 – June 26, 2014
The union of Hammie Houser and Edlena (Donewoody) Houser, married on January 25, 1919, witnessed the birth of John Hammie Houser born November 24, 1922 in Unadilla, GA. The family was blessed to have Ruth M., and John H., from their union. John Houser attended old Woodward High School. John, after graduating high school, worked as a professional Photographer at the local Hollywood Studios, from 1940-1943. He later served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1945 During World War II; His distinguished service was honored with an honorable discharge. During this time he met and married Edna Faye and from that union they were blessed with John Houser Jr. of North Carolina. Ruth Jackson later introduced John to his true love Mattie Lee Dillingham from Richmond Kentucky. They were married on December 06, 1948. Their union begot five children, Joseph Houser, Janet Houser, Jonas Houser, Jerre Houser, and James Houser. John while living and caring for his family held various employment positions; He was employed with United States railroad, and the United States Post Office, and RL Polk Co. He was able to raise his family in their own home in the community of Bond Hill for over 40 years. John was an avid gardener, growing vegetables, roses and shrubs. John was generous with his knowledge of plants and growing seasons, he shared his skills with family, friends, and neighbors. John had a special relationship with the earth in his garden the family found tomatoes, rhubarb asparagus, okra, and peppers. We all have wonderful stories of many miraculous gardening saves, interventions and rescues initiated by John's helpful nature. John's gardening skills were complimentary to the culinary skills of his wife Mattie Houser. Mattie would cook and can the many items grown in John's gardens; making preservatives, jellies, and jams. Harvesting grapes grown and making juice for the family would give her pleasure. Everyone was aware of John's passion for the Cincinnati Reds Baseball team. The Houser families all have stories of accompanying him to many Reds baseball games. John was a season ticket holder, often traveling to be a part of the energy of the Big Red Machine. All of the children and grandchildren were familiar with the various Cincinnati Reds memorabilia that John was willing to share with everyone. John was known by the patrons and Reds staff for a noise maker that he would bring to the games to distract any opposing team of his beloved Cincinnati Reds. As John approached the age of ninety he attended fewer games, but would listen to the games on the radio and watch them on television. It is with gratitude that we acknowledge the generosity of John's kind nature and gentle spirit. John was always willing to offer a helpful hand to his family and friends. He assisted with the children and grandchildren, providing assistance where ever he was needed. There was no job too big or too small. John watched over his children with a quiet love, admiration, and insisting that being a Houser was meaningful. John's family went on growing under his watchful eye as he embraced the power of Grand Parenting, his family was growing and he was now the patriarch of his clan.
