John Henry Hawkins, age 80, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away on Friday, August 12, 2016. John was born on Thursday, September 12, 1935, in Bessmer, Alabama to the union of Joe and Estelle Cheatham Hawkins, who preceded him in death as well as his brother James 'Buddy' Hawkins and his two sisters, Mona M. Evans and Willie Pearl Hawkins. After graduating from Parker High School in Bessmer, Alabama, John joined his uncle and siblings, by moving to Cincinnati, Ohio. He soon met his future bride-to-be, Betty Jean. They were united in Holy Matrimony in 1961. John worked for the Hamilton County Morgue for a while but later returned to Children's Hospital Research Lab as a Certified Lab Technician. He became Supervisor in the Veterinary Medicine Division and retired after twenty-five years of service. He was awarded certificates of Excellence in Performance for Staff Training and Safety. John was a devoted father and had a great love for family. One couldn't have asked for a better Father, Grandfather or Uncle. He was known as 'Uncle John' to his nieces and nephews. He also had a loyal best friend 'Stanley' who preceded him in death. John loved sports; his favorite football team was the New England Patriots. John also enjoyed playing a good game of 'Bid Wiz' and attending the River Downs Race Track. John's charm and personality had a positive affect on many. He was a generous and kind man, always willing to give a helping hand to those in need. John is survived by his wife, Betty, and four children, Gregory, Vanessa (Steven), Anthony, Duryea, two grandchildren, Steven and Egypt, two great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Visitation is from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, on Thursday, August 18, 2016, at the Walker Funeral Home, 1025 E. McMillan Street, Cincinnati (45206).
