John M. Carr, affectionately known as “Red,” was born on August 30, 1962, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Princessa Carr and Johnny Matthews. When Princessa married Roosevelt “Pete” Hill, he took John in as his own son. John was known by many names throughout his life, including Red, John Hill, Johnny Red, Uncle Johnny, White Boy, Red Devil, Jimi Hendrix, Bobby Brown, Casper, and Bob Marley.

Red wasn’t a religious man; however, he did believe in living the life of a Rastafari.

He was educated in the Cincinnati Public School System. Although he only completed the ninth grade, he always instilled in his children and grandchildren the importance of receiving an education. His motto was, “You need to know how to read, write, and do math in life.”

Red was a strict man who meant what he said. He had no filter, so you never knew what he was going to say. Although he may have been raw and rough, he had a soft side and was always willing to help others who needed it.

He had a passion for music and loved playing his guitar. He performed at many different venues and events and played in several bands with his best friend, Peanut; his longtime friend, Ethan; and his son, O’Bryant. His last performance was this past Fourth of July.

Red also enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved watching Bruce Lee, MotorWeek with Butchie, and cooking shows with Rudy. He enjoyed rolling around the West End listening to jazz music with Boonie and listening to Jimi Hendrix and various other types of music. Most importantly, he enjoyed smoking a phat spliff every day.

Red was preceded in death by his mother, Princessa Hill; stepfather, Roosevelt “Pete” Hill; sister, Joyce Hill; nephew, Donshae Gentry; and niece, Jahmaria Gentry.

Red departed this life and went home to his family on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory: his Aunt Marian; Angelina, his best friend and mother of his children; two daughters, Ebony (Justin) and Tasha (Anthony/Rocafella); two sons, O’Bryant (Toshia) and Marcus; and ten grandchildren, Kavion, Peyton, Marquese, Jaelah, Justin Jr., Amarii, Tayvon, Destiny, China, and Carmaya, His step siblings Jacquatta; April; Donald; Sharon Rocky; Dion; as well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm, on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the Walker Funeral Home - Walnut Hills Chapel, 2625 Gilbert Avenue, Cincinnati (45206). The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation, beginning at 2:00 pm. Friends and family will gather to share memories, find solace in one another's company, and honor the legacy he leaves behind.
