Honoring a Remarkable Life Janet Elizabeth Ruff Today, we gather to honor the life of Janet Elizabeth Ruff (known to some as Sister Hadnot), a cherished matriarch who marked the end of preceding generations and became the foundation for four generations that followed her. Born on February 18, 1933, Janet was the younger of two children of Wilbur Smith Sr. and Dorothy (née Dixon) Smith-Martin, both of whom preceded her in death. Her beloved brother, Wilbur Smith Jr., affectionately called her "Bae-Sis" and also preceded her in death. Janet was a resident of Cincinnati, Ohio. She departed this life on January 5th , 2026.

A Pillar of Support Janet was a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, spiritual mother and friend to many. She was resolute and dependable, always ready to help anyone in need, often giving selflessly—even her last—to support her children. Her kindness and warmth touched everyone she met, and she never hesitated to express her love openly.

Family Legacy Janet lovingly raised eleven children, who each will carry memories of their shared struggles, laughter and family bonds.  She was the most influential figure in their lives. Her children are Jesse, Denise, Donald (Teresa), Shirley, Douglas, Lauree, Angela, Dorothy Carol, Freddie, Stanley, and Harold. She leaves behind 30 grandchildren (including Ernest and Janet, who considered her as "momma"; growing up alongside her younger children), 95 great-grandchildren, and 22 great-great-grandchildren; one grandchild, LeAntoine, and one great-grandchild, Ron preceded her in death. She has a host of relatives and friends who will miss her dearly. Her legacy is one of enduring love and family bonds.

Interests and Personality Janet shared many traits with her parents. Like her father, she enjoyed watching old Westerns and episodes of "Little House on the Prairie" If she was watching her favorite shows, she would quickly end the phone call—even if it was a rerun. From her mother, Janet inherited a love for plants and a green thumb; she could nurture even the most wilted plant back to health. She developed an artistic side and started canvas painting so you can view her art pieces with various family members.  Janet was naturally poetic, witty, and had a sharp sense of humor. She delighted in riddles and playful pranks. One memorable family story recalls Janet bringing home a lobster from her job at the Beverly Hills Supper Club, placing it in the center of the kitchen to startle her children at breakfast. After the initial fright, she invited each child to join in the mischief, spreading laughter and fun throughout the morning.

Spiritual Journey Throughout her life, Janet maintained a strong faith. Before learning God's name, she prayed earnestly that she would never have to bury any of her children—a heartfelt prayer that guided her spiritual journey. As her faith deepened, she came to know Jehovah and chose to dedicate her life to him. Janet was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on July 19, 1986, in Louisville, KY.  She attended the Central, Bond Hill, Langdon Farm, and Oakley Congregations, first serving as an auxiliary pioneer for two years and later as a regular pioneer for several more years, until her health began to fail. Even as her health declined, Janet remained dedicated, continuing her ministry by writing letters. Her spiritual legacy endures through her four daughters, one granddaughter, one grandson and one great grandson, all of whom have dedicated their lives to Jehovah. Janet always hoped her children would come to know Jehovah, especially wishing for one son's return. She shared Psalms 34:8 with them: "Taste and see that Jehovah is good; happy is the one who takes refuge in him."

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm, on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness - Roe Street, 6395 Roe Street, Cincinnati  (45227).   The memorial service will immediately follow the visitation, beginning at 2:00 pm. Friends and family will gather to share memories, find solace in one another's company, and honor the legacy she leaves behind.
