Obituary

JAMES BROWN was born on February 12,1925, in Troy, Alabama to the late Ida Mae Brown and James Arthur Barnes. He departed this life on May 1, 2012. At the age of seven his mother passed away and his beloved uncle the late Jimmy Lee Brown and the late Alean Brown brought him home and raised him as their own son. James moved to Cincinnati in the early 1940's and began working for Mary Lee's Restaurant and Candy Company. James loved sports and was an excellent baseball player. He played with The Cincinnati Black Sox's Baseball Team and in 1946 they won the league championship. In 1946 he met the 'love of his life' Doris Dawson, he told her 'you're going to be his wife'. In 1949 she truly became his wife and remained his wife for 63 beautiful long years until his death. To this union one daughter was born, Sandra Cheryl, who was truly a daddy's girl and the apple of his eye. They spent a lot of quality time together fishing, shopping at Findlay Street Market and at various sports events. He educated her on sports but most of all he taught her the value of love and instilled the importance of honesty and every day life principles. She was truly his baby girl. He had a very special bond with his only grandson Aries whom he adored and fondly called 'hoss'. Aries loved his granddaddy with a passion and he faithfully shaved his beard and cut his hair. In the early 1950's James became a member of the Revelation Baptist Church. Later in life he maintained his faith by watching the TV ministry of Dr. Frederick K. C. Price every Sunday. James had a close bond and special relationship with all of his nieces, nephews and cousins. He made them all feel very special. To achieve his desire to do construction work James attended a Trade School where he became a certified Journeyman and a member of the Cement Mason Local 524. While employed with Frank V. Messer, George E. Detzel, and Turner Construction Companies he helped to build many buildings around the City of Cincinnati and supervised many construction crews. James was a very wise man. He knew history and politics like the back of his hand. He remembered faces, names, dates and times. He never met a stranger and could engage in a conversation on any subject and provided those around him with good solid advice. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Doris L. Brown, daughter Sandra C. Bursey, grandson Aries L. Bursey, brother Glenn McClure, sister Mae Ella Woods (who preceded him in death), special cousins Annie Brundidge, Gladys Houston (who were like sisters), very close friends Lee Dell and Dorothy Moton preceded him in death, special niece (like a daughter) Gwen Hanson (Joe who preceded him in death), special nephew (who was like a son) Ronald White (Sherrel), special nephew Greg McClure (Gwen), sister in laws Anna White, Patricia Lee (Climon III), Margaret Dawson, Carolyn Dawson, Shirley Ensley (Benie), Tracy Dawson, Dorothy Thomas (who preceded him in death), brother in laws James Dawson (Geneva), Harold Dawson, Jerome Dawson, Ike Dawson Jr (Carmen), special cousin who was like a brother preceded him in death Willie (Deacon) Wiley (Hattie); special friends Hubert Guest, Frank Haynes and Robert Cox, along with a host of relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. Funeral Services were conducted Saturday, May 12 from the James Temple Church of God In Christ, 1116 Lincoln Avenue, Walnut HIlls, Cincinnati, Ohio. Arrangements entrusted to Walker Funeral Home, 1025 E. McMillan Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206. Share sympathy with the Brown family at www.HerbWalker.com.
