IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ivan Robert
Reynolds
September 29, 1934 – January 30, 2016
Ivan Robert Reynolds, the youngest child of the late Odee and John Reynolds, Sr., was born on September 29, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ivan joined St. Simon of Cyrene Episcopal Church at an early age. He attended Sunday school and served as an acolyte. Ivan graduated from St. Simon's and Hughes High School. He was awarded a basketball scholarship to Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina where he became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. After graduation from Shaw, he joined the United States Army where he was assigned to teach English in Puerto Rico. Upon returning home he continued his education and received his Master's Degree in Counselling from Xavier University. One of Ivan's first teaching positions was at the Glenview School for Boys where he taught social studies. In addition to his regular employment, Ivan drove for Price Cab and managed several rental properties. Ivan and his siblings received funds from the Small Business Administration to operate the Fine Line Alteration Shop. He was the business manager for this family owned business. Ivan retired in 1997 from Princeton City School District where he had been a teacher and a counselor. Ivan was a very active and devout member of St. Simon's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Men's Club, taught Sunday school for several years, and served as the Superintendent of Sunday School. As a member of the Vestry, Ivan was appointed treasurer and served in that capacity for over 15 years. So dedicated to his church and faith, Ivan even ushered (while in some pain) until he had his hip surgery. Ivan had a deep passion for The United Black Episcopalians of which he was a lifetime member. He was the Cincinnati Chapter Treasurer from 1981-2015. In 2010 the UBE recognized and honored Ivan for his dedication to the organization. Ivan also worked with several Southern Ohio Episcopal Diocese groups such as the Commission on Institutional Racism, the Long Range Planning Commission, and the Minority Empowerment Committee. Ivan was a man of quiet stature, yet he was the family organizer. He taught how to plan the annual family reunion. He loved bowling, line dancing, and writing. In fact, just prior to his death, Ivan was writing another short story. Ivan was united in marriage to Lillian Purvis of North Carolina. Two children were born to this union, Michelle and Keith. Lillian preceded him in death in 2003. His wife Clara Howell and his step-daughter Marjorie Howell also preceded him. Siblings who preceded him in death were John, Jr. (Buster), Hazel Gibbs, and Emma Jean Burns. In addition to his children Michelle and Keith, he leaves to cherish his memory his grandson Jairahn (Jay), his great granddaughter Jaylen, his step-daughter Janie Allen Blue, sisters Marian Price, Helen Derkson, LaVerne Tillman, one brother, Benny, and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Visitation is from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, on Monday, February 8, 2016, at the St. Simon of Cyrene Episcopal Church, 810 Matthews Drive, Lincoln Heights (45215). The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 11:00 am. Interment will follow Walnut Hills Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
