Irene G. (nee Garner) Johnson, lifelong resident of Cincinnati, passed away November 3, 2017, in Norwich, Connecticut. Born September 27, 1923, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Ada and Arthur Garner. She was united in Holy Matrimony on September 26, 1964, at Community Church in Cincinnati, to her soul mate Harold Johnson. They were married for 52 years, until Harold's passing in 2016. Irene was a lifetime member of Cincinnati Community Church, and a member of the Woman's Army Corps (WAC) serving at the rank of Private 1st Class during World War II. Irene was part of The Library of Congress Veterans History Project. This project collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. She was a substitute teacher in Special Education. She had a great love for teaching and helping children. She devoted her life to that mission. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Johnson in 2016. She leaves to cherish her memory: her beloved son, Harold " Christopher" Johnson and his wife, Tracey Gomes-Johnson of Norwich, Connecticut; grandchildren, Kayla Johnson and Christopher Johnson of Norwich, Connecticut. Visitation is from 9:00 am until 11:00 am, on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at the Walker Funeral Home - Walnut Hills, 1025 E. McMillan Street, Cincinnati (45206).
