Obituary

Indianola Ezra Hayes, grocer 79-year-old loved to golf when not working in West End tion. When Mr. Hayes wasn't at the store, he was on the golf course. He frequented the Avon Fields golf course so much that other golfers began to call him 'Dad.' He was a charter member of the Greater Cincinnati Golfers, as well as a past president. He had served on Cincinnati's Advisory Council of the Public Recreation Commission since 1968. Indianola Ezra Hayes, 'I.E.' to friends, got an honorable discharge from the Army in 1945, work was scarce. He thought things over and decided self-employment was the answer. With his family's help, he opened a small grocery in West End. For 32 years, Hayes Supermarket thrived in the community under Mr. Hayes' philosophy that 'people have to eat.' Mr. Hayes died Wednesday at the Hospice of Cincinnati. He was 79. When it came to keeping business moving, the entire Hayes family pitched in. 'My mother ran the register, and I was a stock girl and ran produce,' remembered his daughter, Dorothy L. Battiste of Woodlawn. changed after checking directory. 'He (Mr. Hayes) was in the office, keeping books. He was the director, but he worked.' He ran his store in a familiar 'Mom-and-Pop' way, she said. In the early days, he'd personally deliver customers' groceries to their front doors. Later, he hired neighborhood children to make deliveries after school and on weekends. Mr. Hayes was born Oct. 24, 1911, in Bolton, Miss. He spent his childhood in Jackson, Miss, and received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Tennessee State University, Nashville. He joined Omega Psi Phi fraternity at the university and remained active in the alumni chapter after his gradua- Indianola E. Hayes received a Distinguished Service Award from the organization in 1980. He was a member of Revelation Baptist Church, West End, where he served as a trustee and a member of the advisory board. He was also a member of the Walnut Hills YMCA Bridge Club and the Prince Hall Masons of St. John's Lodge No. 3. Other survivors include a daughter, Camilla Shaw of Detroit; a stepson, Cowan Mitchell of Forest Park; a sister, Leanna C. Anderson of Walnut Hills; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two nieces. Visitation will be after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Revelation Baptist Church, 1556 John St., West End. A service will follow at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Union Baptist Cemetery.
