Obituary

In Loving Memory of Hazel Cynthia Gray Hazel was born on January 17, 1926 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Israel Morris and Maggie Johnson who preceded her in death. Hazel went home to be with the Lord Wednesday evening June 3rd, 2015 after a brief illness. Hazel Cynthia was a native of Cincinnati, Ohio where she graduated from Walnut Hills High School. She continued her education at the University of Cincinnati. During this time she was a member of Brown Chapel A.M.E where her grandfather was one of the founders. While she was at Brown Chapel she developed her interest She found herself looking for more adventure. She decided to move to San Francisco with 3 of her friends. They called themselves the The California or Bust Club. After moving to San Francisco, she became active in Temple United Methodist Church where she met Rev. Fred Gray. She later married and became the elegant First Lady of Elmhurst United Methodist Church. The couple shared thirty years of happiness in El Cerrito, California before his passing in 2001. While at Elmhurst, she served on the Conference Board of Trustees, Member of Esthes Circle of United Methodist Women, sang in the choir and was a Certified Lay Speaker. She was a popular guest speaker in the Bay Area. After joining Easter Hill United Methodist Church, she became the Chair of Drama, Chair of Discipline Bible Program for Special Issues, long time member of the NAACP and a realtor. She was known as a warm and welcoming Lady. Her friends from California never forgot her. They continued to send the weekly bulletins, flowers, birthday cards, letters and phone calls. Special thanks go out to all members of the church especially Rev. Dorothy Williams, Arnell Greene, Velma Garrett and Attorney Lisa McIntosh. She leaves to mourn her death Sister-in-law Kathleen Christmon (Henry), Nephews Scott (Christine), Gregory (Jessica), Jonathan (Nicoele), Roderick (Rosa Linda), Mrs. Pam Bracken (step-daughter from Texas), a long time friend Melva Gage of Oakland, California and she has been a special mother figure to Diane Doss, Carolyn Silvers, Beverly Curtis of Oakland, California and a wealth of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation is from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at the Walker- Walnut Hills Chapel, 1025 E. McMillan Street , Cincinnati (45206). The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 11:00 am. Interment is in Walnut Hills Cemetery at Cincinnati, Ohio. Pallbearers: Scott Christmon, Jonathan, Christmon Sr., Gregory Christmon, Roderick Christmon, Jonathan Christmon Jr., Alexzander Christmon. Honorary Pallbearers: Henry Christmon Skylar Smith, Calvin Bouldin Paul Bouldin, Paul Bouldin Lester Shannon Jr. You may express online condolences at www.HerbWalker.com.
