Obituary

George Spencer McDermott was born March 14, 1931, in Washington, Pennsylvania, the only child of the late Arthur and Mary (nee Heilman) McDermott. George grew up during the last years of Herbert Hoover and The Great Depression and the first years of FDR and the New Deal (...and the start of World War II). Luckily, Arthur, a Veteran of WWI, had a steady management job with the West Penn Power Company. George graduated from Washington High School in 1949. After being accepted, George attended Penn State/Edinboro State Teachers College, in Edinboro, Pennsylvania for one year before proudly enlisting in the United States Army at the onset of The Korean War. Following his basic training at Fort Rucker, Alabama and additional training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, George shipped out of Camp Stoneman, California to the Korean peninsula to fight. In Korea, George was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division on military police duty. He was in heavy combat areas - mountain artillery battles, with -40° temperatures. After nine months of combat time, George returned, uninjured, to the United States where he was assigned to the Military Police, at Fort Sam Houston - as corporal/acting sergeant. Being honorably discharged in 1954. George returned to Pennsylvania and (with his G.I. Bill) continued his collegiate education at Grove City College, in Grove City, Pennsylvania. George majored in Political Science with a Pre-Law sub major and a minor in German. He graduated from Grove City College in 1957. Following his graduation, George moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he got a job working for Friden Calculating Machine Company. Still in Pittsburgh, George landed a job as a sales representative for American Optical. He was transferred, with American Optical to Dayton, Ohio in 1959, where he met Sharon Bloomhorst, a business teacher at Northridge High School. They became engaged and were wed on June 16, 1962, in Dayton, Ohio. The newlyweds then got an apartment in Cincinnati, Ohio, in Anderson Township. George worked for American Optical as Sharon taught business classes at Anderson High School. George worked for American Optical, until the mid-60s, before taking a territorial manager position with Wyeth Laboratories - a 25 year career. George and Sharon's only child, Sean Ryan McDermott was born on September 18, 1974, in Cincinnati. George devoted his time to his family and the family cats. For years, George was active in the area's Irish community and the Ancient Order of Hibernians and The American Irish Clubs. George was a member of the Sunset Lodge No. 623 F. & A.M., of Washington, Pennsylvania and a member of Yeatman Lodge No. 162 F. & A.M., of Cincinnati, Ohio, Scottish Rite and Syrian Temple. George was active in several local chapters of veteran's groups, including American Legion Post 484, the VFW, the Korean War Veteran's Association and the 25 Infantry Division Association. George's favorite pastimes and hobbies were reading about history, military history, art and politics, collecting books on these subjects, story telling, chess, golf, going for walks, and playing with his cats. George was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Sharon. He is survived by his son, Sean McDermott and the family cat, Max.
