IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George Henry
Giles
April 16, 1930 – December 1, 2025
George Giles was born on Wednesday, April 16, 1930, in Jonestown, Mississippi. In his youth, he moved with his family to Blytheville, Arkansas, and later moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. In Cincinnati, he initially attended Sycamore High School and, while there, became the first African American member of the school's football team. In his sophomore year, he moved and attended Lockland-Wayne High School, from which he graduated. He and Alma Christine (Battle) – "Chris, his First and Last love" - were joined in marriage on May 3rd, 1954. From this union were born five precious children.
While in High School, George began working for Dr. Gaylord Lewis, proprietor of the Lewis Animal Hospital. After graduation, he became a Veterinary Assistant and continued at the hospital until he retired at age 65. Due to his skills at working with pets within the community, he was often affectionately referred to as "The Dog Man". During his employment, he became enduring friends with Dr. Lewis and the family, a family bond which continued for the duration of his life.
George also had a commitment to community service. He had worked with the Boy Scouts of America in organizing a scout troop in Hazlewood, Ohio, and spent some time serving as scout master. He volunteered for the Cincinnati Tall Stacks Celebration, a riverboat festival held on the Ohio River.
After retiring, he volunteered for The Sycamore Senior Center, delivering meals to other seniors and those in need, in the Meals-On-Wheels program for several years. He loved fishing and was a legendary gardener. He had a bountiful garden yearly, which he shared with friends and family. This was slowed only by his advancing age. His love for gardening was passed down and now continues as a part of the lives of his grandchildren.
George leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 71 years, Alma Christine; his children George Kenneth (Naomi), Gordon Keith, Gary Kevin, Glenn Kelly, and Andrea Carol (Richard); 11 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by siblings Robert Jr., Percy, and Ludie (Butler).
