IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Frances
Spears
February 18, 1935 – March 13, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the transition of Frances Spears, age 90, of Cincinnati, Ohio, who entered eternal rest on Thursday, March 13, 2025, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Frances Spears was born on February 18, 1935, in Anderson, South Carolina, to James, also known as "Gumbo," and Luella Mattress. Although her parents gave her life, she was lovingly raised by her grandmother, Essie Gray.
Affectionately known as "Toot," Frances received her education in Anderson, South Carolina. She later moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she married the love of her life, Erskine Spears, Jr. Together, they shared 43 wonderful years of marriage.
On July 4, 1988, Frances publicly demonstrated her devotion to Jehovah through water baptism. She deeply loved Jehovah and wholeheartedly dedicated herself to her faith—attending spiritual meetings, participating in field ministry, sharing the good news, and joyfully attending assemblies.
Frances was known for her warmth and hospitality—she truly put the "H" in hospitality. She loved to entertain, and her home was always filled with laughter, love, and the aroma of her spectacular cooking. Many of her spiritual brothers and sisters cherished the meals she prepared, which often felt more like grand feasts. She was especially famous for her big tabletop pineapple cake. In her younger years, she hosted an elegant dinner where guests dressed in gowns and tuxedos—a gathering so remarkable that it was featured in a magazine.
Her love for beauty extended beyond the kitchen; Frances adored decorating her home with vibrant flowers and lush plants. She also had an impeccable sense of style, always dressing to the nines with her signature flair. Above all, she made sure her family knew how special they were and how deeply she loved them.
Frances leaves behind a legacy of love and faith, carried on by her son, Peter (Renee) Mattress; her honorary son, Gilbert Derriso Jr.; and her three daughters, Dayna (Tracy) Larkins, Ursula (Michael) Small, and Cher Spears-Gaines.
She was a proud grandmother to 20 grandchildren: Tia, Patrick, Brian, Sheena, Brianna, Pete Jr., Diamond, Tyrra, Tyrrin, Siraj, Mia, Waylan, Nia Loren, Moriah, Saniyah, Aniyah, Makiyah, Toni, Jordan, and Justin. She is also survived by her beloved uncle, Clifton Gray, also known as "Uncle Dook," along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Erskine Spears, Jr.; her grandson, Walter Macklin Jr.; and her foster son, Tyrone (Michelle) Conway.
She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith.
Visitation is from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, on Friday, March 28, 2025, at the Kingdom Hall Jehovah Witness, 3041 Gilbert Ave, Cincinnati (45206). The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 11:00 am. Friends and family will gather to share memories, find solace in one another's company, and honor the legacy she leaves behind.
