IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Frances Virginia
Clay
April 10, 1928 – May 23, 2014
Frances Virginia Clay On April 10, 1928 Mabel Harris gave birth to Frances Harris and her twin brother Franklin in Oglethorpe, Georgia. The newborn twins' father, Charlie, and their sisters Sarah and Almira were ecstatic. A previous set of twins, Eunice and Eugene, had died as infants, but the young family was optimistic that baby Frances and baby Franklin would thrive. And thrive they did. Over the years two more siblings joined the Harris clan, first Charles and then the youngest, Herman. When Frances was still a youngster, the family moved to Elmwood Place, just north of Cincinnati, Ohio. The tiny working class village was predominantly white, but the young African-American family was welcomed and well-respected by their neighbors. Frances made many friends and distinguished herself as a good student at Elmwood Place School. The school only went to the ninth grade and Frances continued her education at Withrow High School. It was difficult catching street cars to get to and from her home in Elmwood to the new school, but Frances persevered and graduated from Withrow in 1945. She wanted to go to Fisk University but attending an out-of-state college simply wasn't in the Harris family's budget. A beautiful young woman, Frances was popular and very social. When she first met young Harold Clay, the best friend of her boyfriend at the time, Frances said she was not impressed. The dashing young Harold knew he could change her mind and proceeded to win her heart. The two were married on January 21, 1950 and just celebrated their 64th anniversary. Over the years Harold and Frances were blessed with five daughters: Mildred, Sharon, Connie, Beverly, and Janice. They raised their girls with lots of love and good old-fashioned discipline. When God called Frances home on May 23, 2014 to join her daughter Beverly (d. 2001), besides her loving husband and daughters, she also left seven grandchildren who loved her very much: Tuesday, twins Donna and Denise, Robert, Susan, Nikki, and Sara. Also mourning her loss are a host of nieces, a nephew, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, as well as countless friends.
