Flora was next in line to her younger sister Viola, who passed away at an early age. Flora was brought up in a Christian home, along with her ten brothers and sisters, and some of their children. After graduation from Bate High School in Danville, Kentucky, Flora followed an older brother, Gilford, to New York, where she worked as a housekeeper and babysitter. Though she liked being there, her mother was not having that, and 'made' her come home. So she packed up her things and went back to the country, only to escape again to the big city of Toledo, Ohio. By this time, Flora was calling the shots and finally made her way to Cincinnati, where most of her siblings now live. Flora worked at Sontag Dry Cleaners with her oldest sister Sally before moving on to work in the laundry at the old General Hospital, now known as University Hospital. Always staying close to her family, she eventually moved into a duplex home with her sister Sally and brother Henry. It is there where she and her sisters prepared delicious meals Sunday after Sunday following Brown Chapel morning services. Flora served on Stewardess Board #1 and served and attended until her health began to fail. Flora met and married James C. Hopkins, the perfect man for her, and for us. This union lasted forty-nine years, until his passing in 2013. Though no children were born to this marriage, she loved his three children as though they were her own, and they loved her the same way. Flora and JC loved fishing, and she could outdo her male counterparts on the lake! The world's best fisherwoman enjoyed catching and eating some of the best fish the Ohio and Kentucky lakes would yield. Also, a Cincinnati Reds fan, Flora would watch the games, whether on TV or at the ballpark. Her special nephew John D. McKitric sat with her nightly following her husband's passing making sure she was safe while other family members, nieces, and did their part out the best they could. She loved us all, and we so loved her. Flora went home to be with the Lord early Monday morning at the tender age of ninety-seven. Six sisters preceded her in death, Sally, Katie, Pearl, Eliza, Ruth (Bell), and Viola. She leaves to cherish her memory: JC's children, Mann, Eleanor, and Patsy, his nephew Butch, a multitude of loving nephews, nieces, cousins, neighbors, and friends. The Master Gardener Himself has plucked a beautiful flower, Her memory sweet as honey is all we have left, and though we loved you, He loves best, And so we bow to the Master's will and we have no regrets. Phyllis J. Brown. Visitation is from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm, on Friday, July 1, 2016, at the Brown Chapel AME Church, 2804 Alms Place, Cincinnati (45206). The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 6:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Dayton National Cemetery, 4400 West Third Street, Dayton, Ohio 45428.
