Obituary

Eugene  Smith November 16, 1946 - July 16, 2022

Eugene Smith was born Saturday, November 16, 1946 in Indianapolis Indiana.  Eugene was the younger of two sons from the union of his parents, Clifton Dunbar and Doris Haynes Smith. The family belonged to Mount Olive Baptist Church in Indianapolis. Gene accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of seven. He completed his education in the Marion County Public School system in Indiana. At the age of 18, Eugene married. To this union one daughter was born. Then they moved to California to be closer to his dad. Gene expressed an interest in enlisting in the United States Army. Because it was the height of the Vietnam War, he was met with some resistance from well-meaning family members. However, he wasn't swayed, and enlisted in the Army while in California. Obviously, a challenging time, however he shared, he learned, grew, and was still grateful for the experience. After he returned home, Gene settled in Cincinnati. He began working for the United States Postal Service (USPS); and retired as an Expeditor, after 30 years with the USPS. Additionally, Eugene always had a mind for business. He was a curious man and never one to sit on his hands! There was always something to do or figure out. Eugene began to educate himself about owning real estate. He earned his Bachelor's degree in business. While in the midst of securing properties throughout Cincinnati, he also showed others who desired to learn, and how to maintenance property. Gene was a quiet, private man. He loved being around family and had a very close, handpicked circle of friends. Everything he did was intentional; even with what seemed like a chance encounter with the lady who would later become his wife. When he asked Annie if she needed any assistance with a stubborn gas handle, she told him, 'No.' He then asked if he could have her number, she again said, 'No.' But all was not lost; he offered her his number, and she accepted it! After some time, Annie did phone him. They dated and fell in love. Because Gene cared so deeply for Annie, he let her know his true intention by asking her to marry him. On May 19, 2007, they were married and began their life together as Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Smith! Annie was very good at bringing out her Honey's fun, relaxed persona. Eugene encouraged Annie to travel and try different things. They worked together at the "Motherland" Chapter One of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and DAVA (Auxiliary), for many years. Eugene served as the Adjutant and Treasurer. He will be sorely missed!

Eugene has always been an active, healthy man. However, health challenges began to take their toll earlier this year. In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 16, 2022, our loved one went to sleep in our Lord.  Eugene is preceded in death by his grandparents, Sandy and Ella Belle Smith; LD and Myrtle Haynes; parents, Clifton Dunbar and Doris Haynes Smith; his brother, Clifton Dunbar Smith Jr., and his nephew, Keith Smith.

He is survived by and leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Annie Mildred Smith; daughters Victoria Jean S. (Coyce Jr) Culberson (Louisville KY) and Laurie Ann Bunkley (Cincinnati OH); granddaughter, Christiane Murell Culberson (Louisville KY); brothers-in-law, Josh (Audrey) Sanderson and Anthony Sanderson (Cincinnati OH); sister-in-law, Betty Burnett (Cincinnati OH); nephews Michael Eugene (Mary) Smith (Cincinnati OH), Paul Lester (Audrey) Smith (Portsmouth VA), Clifton Adonis Smith (Cincinnati OH); a host of great nieces and nephews, "favorite" cousins, loved ones, friends, and a cherished Veteran Brotherhood.
