She was the first of four children, grew up in Sardis, Alabama, attended Sardis High School and graduated with honors. Ethel excelled in academic achievements where she was a born leader. She was praised by teachers and students alike. She confirmed her faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Shiloh Baptist. She married her "Sailor", Hayward Kimble and moved to Cincinnati. There she met her lifelong friend, Mrs. Beatrice Pickard. Even though her home church was Jerrell Baptist Church, started by her cousin, Rev. A. L. Goodwin, she chose to unite with New Hope Baptist Church (under the pastorship of Rev. J.M. Stephens) where she was extremely active until her health begun to fail. Some of her activities included: Women's Day Speaker, Missionary Society, Gospel Choir, Sunday School Teacher, Teacher's Meeting Leader, Christmas, Easter and Children's Day Co-Leader (during the early years), just to name a few. She received numerous awards for her faithful service to the Sunday School Department. She poured herself into her church and her nieces and nephews. Her legacy is still evident today in the lives of those whom she touched and taught. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother: Percy Dukes, Jr. and one sister: Margaret Dukes Robinson. She leaves to cherish her memory, sister: Carolyn (Colleen) Jones, nieces: Loretta, Gerthadean, Marsha, Eartha, Brenda, Linda, Saundra, Vivian, Cherice, Rhochelle; nephews: Roland (Duke), Carl Edward, Reginald, Dodd, Andre, Mario and host of grand nieces, grand nephews and friends. Visitation is from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at the Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 3655 Harvey Avenue, Cincinnati (45229).
