He grew up in Cambridge City, Indiana graduating from Lincoln High School in 1988. During his tenure at Lincoln High, he served as vice president for four years, played on the tennis team and was a member of the National Honor Society. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Purdue University in 1992. In December 1998, he received his doctorate in biochemistry from North Carolina State University. He had a post-doctoral fellowship as a research scientist at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill where he was doing research in pediatric AIDS. Eric was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh, N.C., where he was coordinator for the Eucharistic ministry and participated in the Pre-Cana marriage preparation program.
