Dr. Thornhill was the son of William Ashby Thornton and Ellen V. Jones. He was trained in the medical profession at Medical Medical College of Virginia Commonwealth, University School of Medicine, Richmond, and Hampden-Sidney College Medical Department, 1903. Dr. Thornhill was killed by Emmanuel Wilson "Willis" Hatfield, son of William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield and Levica "Levicy" Chafin. Willis lived from 1888 to 1978, having served a term in the Moundsville, West Virginia prison. Willis is buried in the Hatfield Family Cemetery, Sarah Ann, Logan Co., WV. There is a play entitled "The Murder of Dr. Edwin Thornhill and the Trial of Willis Hatfield," performed in Mullens, WV on January 26, 2009.
