IN LOVING MEMORY OF

Dorothy "Dot"

(Brooks) Gary

June 12, 1946 – March 8, 2024

Obituary

Dorothy Brooks - Gary ("Dot") was born to Claude and Florence Brooks on June 12, 1946. She attended Lincoln Heights High School where she was voted the "most likely to succeed". Because of some personal conflicts as a young adult, Dot found herself making a lot of wrong decisions which resulted in her dropping out of school, led to drug addiction, incarceration, homelessness, giving her daughter up for adoption and almost caused her death.

Years later, Dot realized that it was God's grace and mercy that brought her through these terrible times, and she had to make a change. Through her faith and determination, she returned to school and soon became a strong advocate to help others like herself. She volunteered at homeless shelters, and agencies for addiction and incarcerated women. Her focus was helping lost souls and the needy. In 1997, she was nominated for the highest award given by the Homeless Coalition "The Jimmie Renders Award". She went on to the State Capital in Columbus fighting for homeless families and individuals who faced mental health challenges. She even participated in a commercial that impacted the community's alliance against low-income housing being torn down.

After realizing the plan God had for her life, she joined True Holiness Church of God and birthed the "Gods Doors are Open" Outreach Ministry that referred people in need to various agencies for additional resources. As she continued to serve and grow, God restored her family by bringing all her children together, including the child she put up for adoption. She later became a member of The Wilderness Center pastored by her nephew and his wife Pastors Seron and Lakisa Brooks where she continued to serve in outreach ministries.

Dorothy Brooks-Gary was preceded in death by her parents Claude and Florence Brooks and her daughter, Latasha Brooks. She leaves to cherish her memory her five children, Anthony "Tony" Brooks (Rent), Maurice Brooks, Lisa Youngblood (Randall), Charles "Chuck" Brooks, and Chance Gary; eight grandchildren, Carl, Jamie, and John Mackey, Roman and Dominique Hill, Josephine "Josie" Williams and Johnmica Mason, and Tariq Jones; and five siblings, Imam Alali, Willie Brooks (Norma), Mary Francis (Frankie) Brooks, Elaine Brooks and Janice Crawford and a host of great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, extended family and close friends.
