IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dewey
Baskin
November 30, 1940 – January 19, 2009
Dewey Baskin, oldest son of the late Sybil Lewis and Palmer Worthy, was born on November 30, 1940, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He was the stepson of the late T. J. Lewis. He departed this life before sunrise on the morning of January 19, 2009.
As a child Dewey graduated from the then segregated West End Elementary and Emmett-Scott High Schools in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He is an alumnus of both Friendship and Benedict Colleges, also in South Carolina. After graduation he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where he attended the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.
On January 12, 1987, Dewey was united in holy matrimony with Brenda C. Jackson. Along with his mother Sybil, Dewey owned the Lewis-Baskin Funeral Home in Rock Hill until her death on January 5, 1994.
Dewey was faithfully employed with Thompson Funeral Home for thirty-two years until hey merged with Hall-Jordan in 19989. He continued to work diligently for the company until his death eleven years later.
Mr. Baskin was a member of the United Funeral Directors of Greater Cincinnati, Buckeye State Funeral Directors Association, and the National Funeral Directors Association.
Dewey was also a self-taught and gifted musician. He loved to play the trumpet, saxophone, and piano. Dewey had used his natural talent to help make his way through college.
Dewey has been described by his peers as a natural leader and friend to all, who was always willing to share his expertise, knowledge, and clinical prowess.
To his family, he was a loving patriarch: unconditionally devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His love, generosity, and guidance he also bestowed upon a great network of extended family that both loved and cherished him and were loved and cherished by him.
Dewey was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Brenda C. Baskin (April 9, 2008); beloved brother, Jimmy Lewis, and loving step-daughter, Patricia Hall-Williams.
He is survived by two daughters, Angelia M. Hall of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Briana S. Jackson of Atlanta, Georgia; son, Louis C. Jackson II, of Cincinnati, Ohio; step-daughter, Jacqueline D. Hall; three step-sons, Tommy (Van) Hall, Sammie Hall and David Hall all of Rock Hill, South Carolina; grandsons, Jamil (Yalonda) Hall and Tony (Ebony) Hall of Rock Hill, South Carolina; three step-granddaughters, Lydia Hall, Julie Hall, and Pamela Hall all of Rock Hill, South Carolina; three sisters, Thoma (Frank) Williams of Sumter, South Carolina, Kate (Raymond) McGee of Greenville, South Carolina and Christine (Neil) Hamblin of Stafford, Virginia; aunt, Marian Gaither of Rock Hill, South Carolina; special cousins, Mattie A. Williams and Tina Knighter; great-grandchildren, Yasmine and Alijah; a host of other cousins, nieces, and nephews.
For those he leaves behind, we do not mourn his passing. We celebrate the light and strength of character he instilled in us. We know that his suffering was brief and that he is reunited with his loving wife, and knows the peace and serenity that we all, one day in eternity, will share.
