IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David Ivey
Jr.
December 24, 1948 – September 28, 2015
David Ivey, Jr. - Obituary David Ivey, Jr. was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 24, 1948 to Shirley K. I. Walker (ne Kirkland) and David Ivey, Sr. David passed away in the early morning hours of September 28, 2015 after years of courageously battling a number of serious illnesses. He attended Heberle, Evanston, and Rockdale Elementary schools, Samuel Ach Junior High and Withrow High school, graduating in 1967. David's desire to have an impact on the lives of others lead him to join the Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) on July 1, 1973, as a recruit. His goal realized, on November 25, 1973, David became a Cincinnati Police Officer. David was proud of his achievement, especially since he was able to share it with his mother before her death in September of 1974; she was so proud of him. Early in life, he attended Sunday school and church at Union Baptist Church in the West End. David accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at Evergreen Baptist Church, his grandfather's church home. He later joined First New Shiloh Baptist Church in Avondale. David served on the Cincinnati Police Department for 28 years from 1973 until his retirement on March 24, 2002. When David was diagnosed with diabetes he was considered a health risk to the job and was asked to leave the police force, he steadfastly refused. In a case that became a City Council agenda item and with the support of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Sentinels and the American Diabetes Association, he prevailed in remaining on the force until his eventual retirement. Fellow officers credit David with changing the protocols and perceptions of officers with health concerns. Today the CPD employs capable and dedicated officers, whose medical histories are not an automatic-cause for exclusion from the force. After retirement from the force, David spent his time with his family whom he loved dearly and they him. He eventually lived with his daughters at different stages of his health decline, he enjoyed being spoiled and pampered by them. Every Sunday during Bengals football season he was surrounded with the sounds of laughter, crying babies, and quiet on self-proclaimed, 'Man's Day.' David was preceded in death by his father and loving mother. He is survived by: his brother Lawrence C. Ivey, his sisters Donna J. Reid (Derrell) and Sharon J. Patterson and his brother Samuel S. Walker (Naoko); his daughters Nyema Ivey, Deanna, Brenda, and Linda Walker and the nephew he helped raised E'shawn; his former wife Sylvia Ivey; his former wife Myra Ivey; eight grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, cousins, as well as many extended family members and friends.
