Obituary

Charlesine Blalark was born March 6, 1929,  to the union of the late Edward and Sally Earl Little in Panola, Alabama. She was the youngest of four siblings: Virginia Morris, Minnie Morris, and Sally Starks, who preceded her in death. Charlesine was reared by her grandmother, the late Eliza Humphries Little, from the age of four months, here in the City of Cincinnati.

Charlesine was educated in Cincinnati public schools, where she attended Harriet Beecher Stowe until high school. She graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., and later attended nursing school, becoming a surgical nurse. She was revered as a surgical nurse at Cincinnati Jewish Hospital for thirty-seven years.

Charlesine was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late John Wesley Blalark Jr., and from that union came four lovely children, of whom three preceded her in death: Michael D. Blalark, Marcus B. Blalark, and Rhonda Blalark-Haugabrook. She remained a pillar of strength during the adversity of losing three children and two grandchildren: Jason B. Blalark and Howard A. Mundon Jr. Her strength was her belief in God, who always knew best and understood. He does not make mistakes, although it took endless prayers to sustain. Charlesine was baptized and spent the earliest portion of her religious life at St. Johns A.M.E. Zion where she was very active for many years. She later joined the Southern Baptist Church and was baptized under the pastorate of Reverend James Milton, of which she was a member until her demise.

Charlesine was one of the top models in the Cincinnati area in her younger years, winning numerous trophies and accolades, to include being photographed and written up in the Cincinnati Enquirer, The Cincinnati Post, The Cincinnati Herald, NIP Magazine, PRIDE Magazine, and Hi Lites Magazine during her modeling career. She was the epitome of fashion and always impeccably dressed.

Charlesine was a member of the NAACP, Urban League, National Democratic Party, and President of the Committee for Political Change. She was a very active member of Silver Stars National Federated Club, holding many positions from program Chairman to Vice President. She co-founded the West End Young Federated Club for Teenage Girls. She was a member of the Cincinnati Parents and Teachers Association, in which she chaired many committees to raise money for the schools her children attended. She was recognized as a charter member of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. She worked with Xavier University as a Senior Director, collaborating with the Evanston Community Council. She received a proclamation from the Ohio House of Representatives for outstanding community service as a senior and a proclamation from Mayor Mark Mallory for her civic contribution to the Evanston Community, of which she had been a resident for 66 years. She was inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame in 2002. She was an active member of the Evanston Eastside Senior Group and Senior Advisor to Iota Sigma Chi Sorority.

Charlesine was an exceptional swimmer and diver, high diving from 30-foot boards. She was a master of the culinary arts and enjoyed entertaining. She will be truly missed by those whose lives she touched with her caring smile. She was an excellent mother, grandmother, counselor, and friend. To know her was to love her.

Charlesine leaves to cherish her memories, a loving daughter, Dr. Inga (Blalark) Jones-Broom of Richmond, Texas, goddaughter Keely Tarber of Cincinnati, Ohio, granddaughters Jennifer L. Blalark of Cincinnati, Ohio, Donuel Y. Blalark of Houston, Texas, and Adrianna Charlesine Broom of Richmond, Texas, grandsons, Adam C. Jones of Brownville, New York, Jerrett W.
