IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles Thompson,
Jr
March 10, 1926 – October 4, 2020
Reverend Charles Thompson Jr. was born on March 10, 1926 in Canton, NC. He was the ninth of ten children born to the late Reverend Charles Marion and Anna Belle (Hall) Thompson. The Lord called him home on Sunday, October 4, 2020.
As a youth, Rev. Thompson loved to play pranks, play sports, and throw rocks ("Rock'em!", as he would say) at neighborhood bullies. As a teen, he attended Stephens Lee High School in Asheville, NC where he would later be inducted into the Stephens Lee Hall of Fame in 2010.
At the age of 17, Rev. Thompson decided that he wanted to serve his country in WWII. To do so, he told the Navy he was 18 and enlisted in 1944. In 1946, he was honorably discharged from the Navy. He decided to return to Stephens Lee to finish his diploma and graduated in 1948.
After returning to Stephens Lee, he met the love of his life, Talatha Workman. They were married in 1948 and to this union, they had three children: Ronald Anthony, Tommie Lee and Brenda Carol. In 1952, at the urging of one of his brothers, Rev. Thompson moved his family to Cincinnati, OH. He worked at The United States Post Office, National Lead and Fernal.
At an early age, Rev. Thompson accepted Christ. For many years, he resisted God's calling of ministry on his life. Finally in 1978, he answered the call. At the age of 52, he attended Temple Bible College. During that time, he was a member and became Associate Pastor at First Baptist Church of Kennedy Heights. In 1980, he became a member of Israel Baptist Church in Hamilton, OH, where he served in many capacities. He was a Sunday School Teacher, Bible Study Teacher, a Deacon and an Associate Pastor until his death.
After the passing of his wife Talatha in August of 2003, Rev. Thompson remarried his second wife Jerilyn Cardwell in June of 2005. They were married until her passing in February of 2009.
Rev. Thompson loved to eat (On time!). He also loved driving, fishing, and sharing the love of Christ. Not only was he catching fish, he was a fisher of men. He was fun-loving, a jokester and loved his family.
He had some infamous quotes that he would share with his kids and grandchildren. "Carrots will make you see good." "Green beans (or any vegetable you didn't want to eat that day) will make your hair grow." The one thing they can never take away from you is your education", and most importantly, "Keep God First!"
Rev. Thompson was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, his son, Tommie Lee Thompson, and stepson, Anthony Cardwell; four brothers, Aldon, Lindon, Levester and Edward Thompson; five sisters, Marie Friday, Beulah Daughtery, Gertrude Logan, Virgelene Stepp, and Betty Stringer.
He leaves behind his children, Ronald Thompson of Hamilton, OH, Brenda (Tommie) Liggins of Greensboro, NC; daughter-in-law Betty (Jones) Thompson of Fairfield, OH; stepdaughter, Dr. Lisa Cardwell-Mullins; stepdaughter-in-law Kayla Cardwell; grandchildren, Adrianne (Nicholas) Hubbard of Liberty Township, OH, Shannon Liggins of Greensboro, NC, Tommie (Rachel) Thompson of Memphis, TN, Shellie Liggins of Greensboro, NC and Cory Liggins of Phoenix, AZ; great-grandchildren, Terence (Alyssa), Lyndsi, Tyler, Cory, Cameryn, Caleb, Amaris, Caelan, Kingston and Amore'; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
