Obituary

Charlene Macklin Calhoun was born on May 9, 1945. She was the eleventh child born to Willie and Viola Macklin (both parents preceded her in death). Charlene was frequently called by her family the "Church Lady," a reflection of her faithfulness to the Lord and her church. Charlene peacefully departed this life to be with the Lord on September 20, 2024.

Charlene was baptized at an early age at Corinthian Baptist Church on Wehrman Ave. As an adult, she moved her membership to the First Baptist Church of Mt. Auburn, where she served for 15 years before returning to Corinthian in 1990. Charlene served as a Sunday School teacher, president of the Senior Usher Board, adult advisor to the Children's Usher Board, member of the Historical Committee, team leader of the Jail Ministry, New Members' Class teacher, and team leader of the CBC Foreign Mission Team, renamed to the Charlene Calhoun Missionary for Christ.

Charlene graduated from Central High School. Afterwards, she attended night classes at the University of Cincinnati, where she studied chemistry. Charlene had a long and productive 30-year career with The Procter & Gamble Co.

Charlene served faithfully in her community and church until her health prevented her from doing so. In 2004, Charlene was recognized for her community work with the Talbert House, where she met with President George W. Bush on Air Force One. Charlene was also awarded special recognition from P&G for her community citizenship in 2005.

Charlene was a loving mother of four beautiful children: Anthony, Curtis (deceased), Freddie, and Narvetta. Charlene taught her children to love the Lord and faithfully took them to church.

Charlene was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Viola Macklin; her son, Curtis Calhoun Jr.; three brothers: Leon (Ruth), Willis, and Freddie Macklin; and five sisters: Ola (Julius) Martin, Delores (Ralph) Warren, Carmelita (Willie) Russell, Katie Crews, and Marie (Harold) Willingham. She leaves to mourn her passing two sons: Anthony (Amy) and Freddie Calhoun; one daughter, Narvetta Calhoun; eight grandchildren: Shayla Winn, Antonio, Dominique, Andre, Genesis, Logan Calhoun, Mohammad Groomes, and Kristin Young; twelve great-grandchildren: Donsha and Jah'Ayla Knox, Mia, Carilyn and Andre Jr. Calhoun, Derrick, Derrian, Derrius, and Derrion Waters, Rickey Tucker, Aniyah Groomes, and Callie Groomes; four sisters: Anna Joiner (Johnny), Viola Macklin, Mamie Hamilton, and Christine Macklin; and a host of nieces and nephews. Charlene would also like to acknowledge her cousins, the Grahams, whom she met late in her life but who became an important part of it. Charlene had two very special friends: Sandra (Cookie) Newell and Janet (Candy) Middlebrooks.
