IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carandal K.
Toney
November 25, 1958 – July 29, 2025
Carandal Kay Toney, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and servant of God, entered eternal rest after a life of love, faith, and service. She was born on November 25, 1958, in Meridian, Mississippi, to Geraldine (Cole) Dubose and Robert C. Dubose.
Kay, as she was affectionately known, was a proud graduate of Aiken High School, where she participated in the marching band and the Barbizon Model School. She attended the University of Cincinnati and later graduated from Southern Ohio Business College. She accepted Christ at the tender age of nine at New Unity Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor A.A. Freeman. It was at New Unity that she met the love of her life, Mark Toney, as great friends in the 5th grade while singing in the Youth Choir. Their friendship blossomed into a deep and abiding love, and on September 27, 1980, they were united in marriage at the very church where their journey began. Together they shared 45 beautiful years of marriage, raised five children, and built a legacy grounded in faith, service, and love.
Kay was a talented individual with a diverse range of skills. As a gifted model, she worked professionally in fashion shows and print campaigns with National Modeling Management. Her entrepreneurial spirit was evident in her role as the founder and owner of Carandal's Choice, a successful African clothing line. In addition to her modeling career, Kay studied martial arts at Bell Martial Arts, where she achieved a brown belt and was preparing to advance to black belt. She also enjoyed Zumba and regularly participated in classes held at Fountain Square. Moreover, Kay was deeply committed to her ministry, serving faithfully for 45 years as the First Lady of New Unity Baptist Church alongside her husband, Pastor Mark Toney.
Her heart for service to others was evident in everything she did. Kay served as a Sunday School teacher, sang in multiple choirs, supervised the Youth Choir, and founded the church's drill team and praise dance teams. She organized countless youth outreach efforts, taking community children to movies, skate nights, youth retreats, Baptist conventions, and other events, ensuring they felt loved, seen, and connected. She was a member of the First Ladies for Health Initiative of Cincinnati, advocating for community wellness, and volunteered her time to Autism Awareness initiatives.
Traveling both locally and nationally with her husband's ministry, Kay ministered through dramatic youth revivals and spoke at Women's Day programs, bringing encouragement and inspiration to many. She possessed a rare gift, caring for others even above herself, and embodied the servant's heart of Christ in all her relationships.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert C. Dubose, and her sister, Gala Rogers.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted husband, Pastor Mark Toney; her beloved children, Mark Jr., Michael, Carandal Marquis (Mosha Martin), Manuel A., and Catiya Mikayla (Daryl Jones); her precious grandchildren, Mason, Camiyah, Christopher Mikius, Micah, Maleek, Kaylee, and Jasmine Carandal; her loving mother, Geraldine Dubose; her sister, Erica Goodwin; father and mother-in-law, Thomas James and Rosemary Toney; in-laws, Mary A. Barkley (Darryl), Marion Toney-Reed (Craig), George Toney, Yolanda Morrison (Jessie), and Pearce Toney. She also leaves behind her niece, Kayla Rogers; nephew, Stanley Aric Rogers; a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, extended family, the New Unity Baptist Church family, and dear friends.
Kay's life was a testimony of unwavering faith, enduring love, and tireless service. She will be remembered not only for the many roles she held but for the warmth of her heart, the strength of her spirit, and the countless lives she touched along the way.
