IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Calvin James
Chapel, Jr.
June 21, 1974 – May 18, 2025
Calvin James Chapel Jr. was born on June 21, 1974, and passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025. He was the beloved son of Yolanda Johnson (deceased June 8, 2019) and Calvin Chapel, and is survived by his loving father and cherished siblings: Erin Chapel, Eric Morris, Darice Chapel, and Millard Thower. He was a proud uncle to Jayla Travis, Jaylan Chapel, Jayce Bothwell, Elijah Brandt, and Makayla Morris, and a devoted great-uncle to Oaklynn Chapel—whom he often loved as if they were his own child.
Calvin, affectionately known as "Chilly Cal" for his laid-back demeanor, valued the joy of childhood and found deep fulfillment in nurturing those around him. He shared a special bond with his aunts and uncles, including Aunt Pepper, Uncle Jay, Uncle Albert, Uncle Terry, Uncle Willie, and Aunt Jackie, who were like second parents to him. His many childhood friends became like brothers, creating lifelong connections that brought richness and joy to his life.
He now joins his beloved mother Yolanda Johnson, grandfather Elijah Johnson, grandmothers Yvonne Johnson and Reba Chapel, and stepmother Virginia Chapel in Heaven. Calvin was a private man with a kind heart, known for his sarcastic humor and thoughtful spirit that brightened many lives. After receiving his GED, he worked in home improvement for many years before finding a fulfilling career at Metro, where he formed countless friendships that felt like family.
Calvin was known for his gentle soul and unwavering respect for the women in his life, always showing the traits of a true gentleman. He had a passion for fashion—especially his shoes and glasses—and enjoyed fishing, cooking, dining out, and working on his mother's home. He loved quiet moments spent at home, often listening to music and talk radio. A talented artist, he appreciated nature and was fond of old-school TV shows.
Though large in stature, Calvin was a man of quiet strength, respected in his community for his humility and compassion. He often checked in on his father and other family members, and took great pride in mentoring the youth he encountered along his bus routes. He was a gentle giant—a man full of love who was deeply loved in return.
Recently, Calvin obtained his passport and was eager to explore the world. Now, he sees it from a better view. He will be greatly missed, as people with hearts as big as his are truly rare.
Thank you for being part of our lives, Calvin. May you rest peacefully with Mom—we know how much you missed her. We love you always.
